Can the Rocket be stopped in Preston?

Snooker Betting

It is off to Preston this week for the Snooker World Grand Prix and after his recent Masters triumph, it is Ronnie O’Sullivan who is rocketing ahead of the rest of the field to lead the betting at a price of 4/1 with bookmaker Ladbrokes. The action will go through to February 12th and the winner will be walking away with £100,000 in his pocket. This is a 32-man competition for the top 32 players on the one-year ranking list who get a precious spot in the tournament.

The defending champion up is Shaun Murphy who edged out Stuart Bingham in last year’s epic final, claiming the title in a deciding frame. O’Sullivan was beaten by Michael Holt in the first round of last season’s action and with the Rocket surprisingly going out of the German Masters in the first round against Mark King last week, it may just send punters in the direction of opposing the favourite, which would make some sense for value here. Basically you never know how interesting O’Sullivan is going to be in a tournament.

The interesting thing about this tournament at the Preston Guild Hall, is that there have only been the two previous editions and it only became a ranking tournament for the first time last year. The previous 2015 final saw Judd Trump taking out O’Sullivan in a thrilling final at Llandudno, Wales. So in this busy period of top action on the snooker circuit, who is the one who is most likely going to really oppose O’Sullivan in the betting market?

Will it be 17/2 shot Judd Trump who becomes the first man to ever win the tournament twice or will it be the always-threatening Mark Selby who is the closest man to O’Sullivan in the Snooker World Grand Prix Betting 2017 Winner Odds?

So how do we break all of this one down? O’Sullivan was immense at the Masters, no-one looked close to touching and it was a fantastic sight seeing him control the baize so well and looking focused-in on his game. The Essex-born legend heads up to Lancashire though as a puzzle for punters. When he is on his game there is still no-one in the world who can get close to standing up to him, but then again, as he showed in his slump in the first round at the German Masters, he is liable to come unstuck.

So that is probably the indicator which will send punters away from him and Mark Selby makes the most sense of all the chasing pack to be the one to lift the trophy. He is going into the tournament with more ranking points (actually more than double the amount of any other player) this season than any other competitor. He has won three ranking tournaments this season, so he has been carrying the form and should find himself in the quarter finals easily.

Interestingly though, Selby, O’Sullivan and Judd Trump, along with Neil Robertson, are all lumped together inside the top half of the draw. So that makes things hit and miss completely. If you look at the other half of the Snooker World Grand Prix 2017 draw then you will see that Ding Junhui and Marco Fu both have good runs through to what would be a semi final clash between them. Taking our snooker betting fancy this week is Fu who has claimed the Scottish Open title this season and he went to the semifinals at the Masters recently.

He is a big enough price to split each way in opposition to either O’Sullivan or Selby from the top half. The cluster of talent in the top half of the table is going to make for an exhausting run for one of those. Our tip would be just to run with the form, the consistent form that is, of Selby to edge his way through the mix from there.
