Southampton News and Form – Can Saints beat Bournemouth at St Mary’s?

Southampton earned three points last weekend with an away win at Sheffield United. That was a 1-0 win which the Saints took and it moved them on to a W2 D1 record in their last three top-flight games. The two wins in that sequence were out on the road with clean sheets. The Saints are looking for their first home win of the season having going D1 L1 in their two home fixtures so far. But still, they were competitive there, losing 2-1 against Liverpool and playing out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

So they have been in pretty decent shape in their recent games and they will kick off as slight favourites on St Marys for this south coast duel. Southampton have hit the back of the net in each of their last four games, but they haven’t taken a clean sheet yet on home soil. All five of Southampton’s league goals in this campaign have been scored in the second half of matches, which is a nice little betting trend to consider.

Of the six goals that they have conceded, four of them have come in the second half of fixtures. There has only been two defeats in the last eight home Premier League fixtures from Southampton (W3 D3). But they have failed to win any of their last four there, which is something to consider for the outright market in this one. That run of winless home form started last April with a 3-3 draw against Bournemouth. The Saints have no clean sheet in seven home games.

Bournemouth News and Form – Will Cherries avoid defeat in south coast clash?

Bournemouth collected a 3-1 home win over Everton last weekend, so that was a nice lift for them. They had lost their two previous games. Each of their last three games in Premier League now have all ended in a 3-1 scoreline (Bournemouth W1 L2). The Cherries are still on the hunt for their first clean sheet of this season. They have scored three goals more than Southampton have managed this term.

But then that gets balanced out because the Cherries have conceded three goals more than the Saints have done. Last season Bournemouth had a terrible time of things in Premier League away games. At one point they went on a nine-match losing streak away from home. It adds up that they have won just three of their last sixteen top-flight road games (D1 L12).

In each of their last eight away losses in the Premier League, Bournemouth have conceded at least two goals, which is a terrible record. This season the Cherries have scored the opening goal in three of their five games, but have been leading at half time just once. Each of their three away goals have come in the first half of fixtures. Bournemouth’s last five away games have gone all finished over 2.5 goals.

Southampton v Bournemouth Predictions

Draw: The outright draw has the most appeal in this one. Bournemouth are never the most reliable of teams out on the road by any stretch of the imagination and Southampton look to have a good shape about them currently. This looks too evenly balanced to call. Draw.
