Southampton News and Form

It is another important relegation battle for Southampton after playing out a 1-1 draw Burnley last weekend. That point leaves Burnley as the only side between Southampton and Cardiff who are third from bottom. The draw though at Turf Moor made it five games undefeated now for Southampton in the Premier League.

Their last two games have both ended in 1-1 draws against Crystal Palace and then Burnley. Southampton have only won two home games all season (D6 L4) but have taken four points from their last two there, earning a victory over Everton and then the draw against Palace.

By a fair degree, they have been much more difficult beat, but there are defensive issues which still remain. They don’t have a clean sheet in any of their last four Premier League games, and only have one in their last 15 in total. This season Southampton have drawn all four home games played this season against sides currently 13th or lower in the table. Two-thirds of Southampton’s games at home this season have produced over 2.5 goals, with the Saints having just over a goal per game. Both teams have scored in all but one of Southampton’s last eight Premier League games.

  • The Saints have conceded in 14 of their last 15 league fixtures
  • Cardiff have failed to score in four of their last seven league games

Cardiff News and Form

Cardiff gave themselves a huge lift last weekend as they beat Bournemouth 2-0 and they were value for those points as well. It did leave them still in the bottom three but they can get out of that position if they can earn themselves another win this weekend. The victory over Bournemouth snapped a four-match sequence of Premier League games in which Cardiff picked up just one point.

Away from home, they have found the going a little bit rough as they have only earned five points from a W1 D2 L9 record so far. The only positive to take from that is that all of their away points have been earned against sides currently in the bottom half of the table. The goals haven’t been coming easy for them, with Cardiff having scored seven times on their travels.

Home and away combined, Cardiff have failed to score in four of their last seven EPL fixtures. Defensively they have conceded just a tiny shade under two goals per away game. Cardiff have earned a clean sheet in 25% of their road games this season. But in each of their last two away from South Wales they have conceded at least two goals per game.

Four of the six league victories that Cardiff have earned this season have only been by the one-goal margin. The second half of Cardiff’s away games this season have been where the goals have been at. Cardiff have scored 86% of their away goals after the half-time break. They have conceded 70% of their away goals in the second period of fixtures. Cardiff have the second-worst away record currently in the EPL (Fulham).
