Southampton News and Form – Can Saints defend St Mary’s

It was a bad start to the new campaign for the Saints. They had a rough time of things last season in the top flight, with some relegation concerns hanging over them. But Ralph Hasenhuttl did his job and guided them to safety. So after surviving those struggles, they were carrying a bit of optimism into the new season for themselves. That bubble was quickly burst as they suffered a 3-0 loss at Burnley last weekend. Will they be able to dust themselves down from that disappointment and nail down a home success?

Liverpool -2.75 Asian Handicap

Southampton’s record at St Mary’s last season in the top tier was W5 D8 L6. They had a poor start to the season on home soil, not managing to win any of their first seven games of the campaign (D5 L2). Their first home win did come against a top-six side though, a 2-1 victory over Arsenal. Even though they had their struggles the Saints did produce a decent home record against teams in the top half of the table. They went W4 D1 L3 in such matches. 78% of all games at St Mary’s went over 2.5 goals with the Saints only managing a clean sheet in 16% of their home fixtures. Southampton scored first in 12 of their 19 home games.

Liverpool News and Form – Will Reds keep up winning start?

Community Shield. Premier League. UEFA Super Cup. Extra time in the UEFA Super Cup. It’s been a busy start to Liverpool’s new season. Still, they are strong favourites to win on the south coast in this one. They blasted their way to a 4-1 success over Norwich at Anfield to kick their EPL season off.

Even though their preseason wasn’t great they clicked well, their front line is looking as devastatingly brilliant as usual. Mo Salah took just 20 minutes to open his account for the season and he is the 3/1 first goalscorer favourite for this fixture* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 14th, 2019 at 6:12 p.m.).

Liverpool won 13 of their 19 away games last season (D5 L1). The only defeat they took on the road, the only defeat of their entire league season actually, was their reverse at the Etihad against Manchester City. It was a four-match away from winning streak that they finished with.

Liverpool averaged 1.8 goals per away game last season and their defence was just so impressive. They conceded an average of just 0.6 goals per away game, taking a clean sheet in 47% of all away fixtures. The Reds claimed a win in all of their away games against the bottom 10 finishers of last season. Liverpool scored at least two goals in 8 of those 10 such fixtures.

Southampton v Liverpool Predictions

Liverpool to win: On the evidence of what was produced on the first weekend of the new Premier League season, this should be a routine success for Liverpool. The Reds picked up where they left off last season and should have way too much quality for a Southampton side who got off to a really slow, poor start. Liverpool to win to nil.
