Southampton v Wolves Betting Preview – EFL Cup 23rd August 7.45pm

Southampton are trading as the favourites to win this time on home soil, but they have won just one of their last four on home soil against the Midlands club. Wolves have had a pretty strong start to the new Championship campaign and if the Saints don’t play their cards right in this one in terms of team selection, could have a bit of a battle on their hands in the fixture. It should be a pretty competitive night down on the south coast.

Southampton v Wolves EFL Cup Betting Tips

The Saints have opened the season with four points from their two Premier League games so far and they were both at home. They stay at St Mary’s again for this EFL Cup second round tie. But this could be a fairly tricky battle against Championship side Wolves. However, the Saints should be reliable enough at the back for this to be a low scoring fixture and under 2.5 goals at Coral is trading at a price of even money which looks value. Three of the last four fixtures between the Saints and Wolves on the south coast have gone under the goal line. Wolves have actually failed to score in three of their last four visits there and Southampton to win to nil is up at a price of 6/4.

In the Coral anytime goalscorer market, Southampton aren’t exactly short of goalscoring power, but of course, this is an early league cup game and therefore the temptation will be there to change up the side. Charlie Austin is at 20/21 with Manolo Gabbiadini at 11/8 and Shane Long at 7/4 in the anytime goalscorer market. So a close game is expected on the south coast in this clash and another way to back a low scoring game is by looking in the Coral correct score market where a Southampton 1-0 and a Southampton 2-0 are joint 6/1 favourite options. There have been just the five goals in total in the last four games between these at St Mary’s.

Wolves can be pleased enough with their start to the new season as they came out of the gates flying. They have won four of their five games played in all competitions, but they suffered a 2-1 home loss against Cardiff on the weekend in the Championship. That was a top two battle in the league with the Bluebirds going strongly at the moment as well. In the last round of the EFL Cup, Wolves took a 1-0 home win over Yeovil to get through and naturally they did make some changes to their starting lineup. Leo Bonatini is a 10/3 anytime goalscorer option for them with Nouha Dicko at 7/2. Wolves have won both of their away games this season, scoring five goals in the process. They may well turn up and make this a strong contest.

Southampton v Wolves EFL Cup Predictions

Southampton to win: A tight game is exerted here but because Wolves have started strongly in the Championship, they are probably going to be a little more focused there, whereas the Saints may have a go at this. Look for a home win and under 2.5 goals.
