The distance for the race is 6f 16y and it looks as if there is going to be a big duel between Nigel Nott, who is looking for a hat trick of wins and Sandridge Lad who has won his last three C&D appearances.

Can Nigel Nott make it three in a row?

There has been a form delivered by Nigel Nott. He has won his last two races, the first of which was at Chelmsford in mid-January in a 5f trip. He was back out at the end of January and delivered again on a similar trip as the 4/6 favourite.

That was in a lower class race, but he was well up in the weights from his Chelmsford success. Given his form, he hasn’t been too badly treated by the handicappers for this one and that should pull him back into contention. He comes in for what is his handicap debut as 13/8 favourite* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 19th 2020 at 23:38).

Sandridge Lad with C&D claims

Arriving with some big, big claims is Sandridge lad. He has won his last three over course and distance. He knows Southwell well, clearly likes the track and is right on it at this distance. Two of his three wins at Southwell this season were at class 5.

The most recent was up at class 4. Can he go higher? The John Ryan-trained charge just can’t be ignored with what he has been producing here, even though he was only out as recently as last Friday. He’s 9/4 to take this race win* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 19th 2020 at 23:38)

Zylan and Katheefa

These two are both course and distance winners. Zylan brings plenty of experience to the table for the race, having won ten times between 5f and 1m. He won last year’s renewal.

Zylan’s delivered eight successes on the all-weather as well in his career. His form hasn’t been bad recently, having placed in each of his last four. The most recent of which was a third-place (of six) at course and distance last month.

Katheefa was also out at the course and distance last month in a class 2 run. He was fourth third, a place back of Zylan. But earlier in January when the two went head to head it was Katheefa who ran to a one and three-quarter length victory over Irish challenger Zylan at class 4.

They will probably be closely matched up again with Zylan at 10/3 and Katheefa at 11/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 19th 2020 at 23:38)

Samovar with too big of an ask?

There is a clear outsider here and that is Samovar. In last year’s renewal, he was behind Zylan as he weakened inside the final furlong.

He hasn’t recorded a win since a course and distance success in December last year. This will be his seventh race of 2020, only really having shown up in shorter races than this.

Predictions & Tips

There are two good contests here. There is Nigel Nott against Sandridge Lad. Then there is Zylan against Katheefa. Is the race going to play itself out as straightforward as that?

In terms of the win, it has to be Sandridge Lad that gets the nod. He has been tearing things up at Southwell and just that extra track experience is going to count for a lot as he goes for four in a row at course and distance.

Nigel Nott looks as if he can improve plenty but may come up short in this handicap debut. Zylan and Katheefa have all the tools to be competitive and they can heap some big pressure on the favourite as well, even for a place finish.
