Can Astro Jakk rise to the occasion?

There has been plenty of support for Astro Jakk in this race who is the 5/2 favourite* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 21:13). He is a course and distance winner, claiming a success just back on 7th January at class 4. So that has put him in contention.

He was back out the very next day strangely enough at Newcastle and finished 6th of 8. He simply weakened in the final furlong but was at the head of the pack just before that. It was a run that really didn’t offer anything for him at all, however.

Astro Jakk
5/2

Bet365

He is at a higher mark of 85 for this fixture now, but he is a horse that looks more comfortable on fibresand where he has won at 5f and 6f before. He’s likely to be well in it.

Saaheq can challenge

Another course and distance winner is Saaheq. He begins the current form at the table. His last outing was the course and distance success landed in October last year when he beat out Samovar by one and a quarter lengths. He has switched up stable since then. He was with Michael Appleby and now is with Amanda Perrett and is a leading contender at 3/1

Moonraker and Lord Riddiford

Closely aligned at 4/1 and 10/3 respectively in the market are Moonraker and Lord Riddiford* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 21:13). The former was a beaten favourite last time out over course and distance, the race won by Astro Jakk. Moonraker was a long 10l back of the winner, finishing last.

Lord Riddiford had a total blow out as well on his last race when he was 18th of 22. That was on a 5f trip to York in October last year. He has won five races at the 5f distance in his career. Two of those have been on polytrack. There just hasn’t been the recent form there to suggest that he can battle to contention.

The rest of the field

Samovar just hasn’t been able to deliver that winning touch. He is a course and distance winner, landing six race victories from 5 to 6f. Five of those have been on fibresand so that does give him claims. He was last of four in his previous race which was at 6f at Southwell in early February.

Moveonup is an interesting proposition. He has already taken wins at Southwell and Chelmsford this season. With Moveonup being a course and distance winner and not having been outside of the places in way of his four runs, that does pique interest. The only issue is that he has jumped 13lb on his return for this.

North Wind is with a new stable for this race. He was fifth of eight in his last race which was in September 2019, so he has had a considerable break. The four-year-old has won at 6f before but is probably going to need to find quite a bit.

Predictions & Tips

Astro Jakk v Saaheq. That genuinely looks like what this battle is going to be all about. Saaheq is up only 4lb for this contest and should be able to get in the frame. Both he and Astro Jakk have beaten Samovar recently.

But on his last run on fibresand Astro Jakk was in fine step. He looked really good there and his follow-up poor trip at Newcastle can be ignored. He should be comfortable back on his surface and can deliver the win.
