Hang Tough can strike a win at Southwell

Horse Racing Betting

This looks a very good Handicap Hurdle at Southwell on Monday afternoon. It’s a 3m trip for the 13 entered. At the head of the market, the odds are depicting an expected two-horse race.

Hang Tough and Fizzlestix are up as the joint-favourites. The rest of the field in this class 5 contest are lagging in the odds.

Hang Tough

Things are always interesting when there is such a close battle at the head of the racing betting market. There’s certainly one here with Hang Tough and Fizzlestick set for a battle.

Hang Tough produced a hurdle win at Warwick in late February. He made the most of conditions there including a 3lb drop to strike. Hang Tough will bring forward claims from that success even though it wasn’t a high-quality contest.

He’s up 5lb for that success and the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Hang Tough should be in the frame at 11/4* (betting odds taken from Coral at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020)

Hang Tough
11/4

Coral

Fizzlestix

Fizzlestix also brings a win to the table from his last race. He struck in his second Chase effort to claim the success at Plumpton earlier this month. Like Hang Tough’s recent win, it didn’t come in a high-quality race.

So that keeps the field level between the two of them. He stays as the same mark for this trip over the timber, but he does look as if there is a fair amount of inconsistency about him.

But still, he ran well at Warwick, despite the company and lines up as the 11/4 joint-favourite* (betting odds taken from Coral at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020).

Pleney

Pleney is one of the leaders from the chasing pack in the betting for this one at 15/2* (betting odds taken from Coral at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020). The last run that he had was at Hexham in mid-December when he was 6th.

He actually looks like quite a consistent horse, but with no win under his belt anywhere, punters are going to be left wondering if the six-year-old can get the job done.

Conditions didn’t suit him last time out to be fair and he had taken back to back place finishes in hurdles before that. So he can be competitive without question.

Jour A La Plage

The Evan Williams-trained Jour A La Plage is coming along very nicely in his hurdling career. The five-year-old has been handled very well and has taken third in his last two trips over hurdles.

The most recent of those was at Sedgefield in early January. So he’s been lightly worked and for this first handicapping experience, will have cheekpieces fitted.

He could be a very interesting player to get in the mix at 9/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020)

Dubai Outlaw

There has been no form whatsoever from Dubai Outlaw over the hurdles. He was 11th on his last trip which was at Uttoxeter in December. That was in testing conditions but coming in at 11/1 for this race, there isn’t much appeal there* (betting odds taken from Coral at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020).

Worthy Mentions

Shaiyzar is that at 11/1 odds along with Dubai Outlaw* (betting odds taken from Coral at 21:45 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020). He does bring better claims to the table however because he is a course and distance winner.

However, he has won 2 of 29 trips over the hurdles in his career. So the 11-year-old Shaiyzar is not exactly a red-hot contender. He has fallen on his last two trips as well because his jumping has been really off.

Boher Lad is another course and distance winner. The most recent of those was in August last year. He was 3lb lighter for that success. Hasn’t managed to follow it up with form and will be returning from a long absence.

Another who has had course and distance success is Riddlesdown who has won seven times at Southwell. Four of those seven successes were over a hurdle. The last time he was tested over hurdles was at Southwell in April last year. He pulled up in that one. He was involved in a chase at Southwell on his last run which was last summer and he took fourth.

Predictions & Tips

We can’t drop down the field too much in this one. Let’s start at the top with the joint-favourites Hang Tough and Fizzle Stick. Of the two we would lean towards Hang Tough just because of him being at the right end of the handicap and for having Jonjo O’Neill.

As for the place contentions, it has to be Jour A La Plage for us. He goes with the cheekpieces for the first time. The five-year-old has been coming along steadily and can continue his good progression with a finish in the money.
