It was a 3-1 reverse that Spain suffered in their opening game of the tournament. That meant that they were on the back foot early on. Only the group winners were guaranteed to make it through to the knockout. So the losing finalists from 2017 looked in danger of packing their backs early. But a late goal from Pablo Fernals in their second match against Belgium got them up and running with a 2-1 win.

The French are back in the semifinals of the U21 Championships for the first time since 2006. Their tournament started dynamically as they had to fight back really late on against England to get a 2-1 success over the Young Lions. They followed that up with a 1-0 win over Croatia in a tougher game than expected for them. So the French had to take a win over Romania in their final group stage match to top the group. That is because they were level on points with them, but trailing the Romanians on goal difference.
France and Romania played out a 0-0 draw. France already knew that a draw would guarantee them a place in the semi-finals. So they didn’t risk a lot naturally. A point suited both sides perfectly. Mousa Dembele, who scored their winner over Croatia is a bit of a doubt for this one. It is looking a little bit questionable as to whether France can really go toe to toe with the Spaniards in an outright attacking battle. France scored just three group stage goals compared to the eight by Spain.
