Spain U21 News and Form

It was a 3-1 reverse that Spain suffered in their opening game of the tournament. That meant that they were on the back foot early on. Only the group winners were guaranteed to make it through to the knockout. So the losing finalists from 2017 looked in danger of packing their backs early. But a late goal from Pablo Fernals in their second match against Belgium got them up and running with a 2-1 win.

France To Qualify

In the final round of group stage matches, Spain had to beat Poland. Poland had won their opening two fixtures, scoring heavily. However, the Spaniards had clearly saved their best for last as they took a 5-0 win in some style. That meant they finished level on points with Poland and Italy and Spain topped the pile on the head to head goal difference. They got exactly what they needed. So that was some statement from them and there’s nothing like peaking at just the right time.

Spain have been to the final of all but one of the last four editions of the U21 Championships. So it’s been strong stuff from them lately. The Spaniards have won seven of their last nine games at U21 level (D1 L1). They won nine of their ten qualification games to reach the Finals, the only blip coming against Northern Ireland who finished second to them in the table. In their last thirteen games in U21 Championship matches (including qualification) the Spaniards are W11 L2.

Key-Facts – Spain U21 v France U21

  • Spain have won 11 of their last 13 games
  • The Spaniards have outscored France 8-3 in the Finals so far
  • France have won just three of their last nine games

France U21 News and Form

The French are back in the semifinals of the U21 Championships for the first time since 2006. Their tournament started dynamically as they had to fight back really late on against England to get a 2-1 success over the Young Lions. They followed that up with a 1-0 win over Croatia in a tougher game than expected for them. So the French had to take a win over Romania in their final group stage match to top the group. That is because they were level on points with them, but trailing the Romanians on goal difference.

France and Romania played out a 0-0 draw. France already knew that a draw would guarantee them a place in the semi-finals. So they didn’t risk a lot naturally. A point suited both sides perfectly. Mousa Dembele, who scored their winner over Croatia is a bit of a doubt for this one. It is looking a little bit questionable as to whether France can really go toe to toe with the Spaniards in an outright attacking battle. France scored just three group stage goals compared to the eight by Spain.

France are W3 D1 L1 in their last five games. They have picked up a clean sheet in three of those five as well. However, their extended form isn’t all that great. France are W3 D4 L2 only from their last nine fixtures. During qualification for the U21 championships, France posted a W9 D1 record from their ten games, conceding just six goals. The midfield area looks as if it is going to be where the key battle is going to be in this game. Will the French be able to control things there to stop the flow of the Spaniards?
