There is a big week coming up for Rangers but they can’t afford to take their eye off the ball for a potentially tricky visit to the Simple Digital Arena this Sunday.
St Mirren Form and Team News
Jim Goodwin has boosted his options this week with the signing of Junior Morais from Northampton Town. The former Wycombe Wanderers and Peterborough United striker could make his debut for the Buddies against Rangers having struggled for game time at the Cobblers, though Jonathan Obika has been doing well as the lone striker even if scoring has been a problem.
St Mirren have made a better-than-expected start to the campaign having been unlucky to lose against Hibernian and then beating Aberdeen.
Goodwin looks to have made an immediate impact at St Mirren Park and his team have been organised, conceding just one goal in their last five matches in cup and league. Youngsters Kyle Magennis and Kyle McAllister have both been called up into the Scotland U21 squad and there is a feelgood factor surrounding the club at present.
Rangers Team News and Form
Steven Gerrard is still seeking to add to his Rangers squad with the prospect of a Europa League campaign a distinct possibility following a battling 0-0 draw with Legia Warsaw in Poland during the week – the Gers will fancy their chances of finishing off the final qualifying tie at Ibrox next week. The first Old Firm derby of the season also looms large on the horizon but the Light Blues can not afford to drop points in Paisley if they are to keep pace with Celtic at the top of the table.
Gerrard is still chasing Liverpool’s Ryan Kent and is prepared to break the club’s transfer record to sign the midfielder but Rangers have won both of their Premiership matches so far, scoring eight goals in the process, and are also through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup. Alfredo Morelos has scored five and Jermaine Defoe four since the start of the Premiership campaign and the Gers have kept clean sheets in their last two so will fancy their chances of a positive result at St Mirren.
St Mirren v Rangers Head-to-Head
Rangers have only lost once against St Mirren in their last 23 meetings and not since 2011. St Mirren have not kept a clean sheet against the Glasgow side in 17 matches since 2010 with Rangers winning six of their last seven meetings with the Buddies to nil.
St Mirren v Rangers Current Match Odds
St Mirren 16/1, Draw 11/2, Rangers 2/9 (Odds correct at 5.15pm August 23)
St Mirren v Rangers Predictions – can the Buddies thwart the Light Blues?
St Mirren don’t have history on their side in this fixture but they have found some belief under Jim Goodwin and Rangers have had a busy few weeks. That said, this should be another three points for the visitors at a best 2/9.
Rangers are 7/1 with Betvictor to win 1-0 in the Correct Score market.
