Insiders at the BBC revealed that the producers of Strictly Come Dancing 2017 were worried that they wouldn’t be able to attract participants for this season’s show because of ‘The Curse’ which has ruined the marriages of previous competitors.

Intensive training and long hours spent with dance partners can undoubtedly put a strain on relationships but it shouldn’t affect the Reverend Richard Coles or gay comedienne Susan Calman this year.

Three pop stars, two comedians, a vicar and a Paralympian athlete help to make up the star-studded line-up for the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing and they are being joined by broadcasters, the usual plethora of soap actors and a magician’s widow when the show launches on the BBC next month.

Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman will return to host the first series not to have Len Goodman as a judge with Bruno Tonioli, Darcey Bussell and Craig Revel Horwood instead joined by ballroom champion Shirley Ballas but there are sure to tributes to the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, who made the show what it is.

Aston Merrygold is a member of boyband JLS. They finished second to another Strictly Come Dancing contestant, Alexandra Burke, in the 2008 series of X Factor but he’s since got on to become a judge on Sky’s Got to Dance so should know his way around a dance floor and is the general 3/1 favourite. Burke has established herself in stage musicals like The Bodyguard and Sister Act and is a best 6/1 while Paralympian Jonnie Peacock is a general 10/1.

Saturdays’ singer Mollie King is hoping to go one better than bandmate Frankie Bridge, who came second in Strictly in 2014, and is among the early favourites at 4/1.
