Die Roten had to settle for third from bottom last season in the Bundesliga. Their record was W7 D7 L20. That meant that they had to go through the stresses of relegation playoff against Union Berlin from the second tier. Stuttgart were favourites for the tie, but they couldn’t get the job done. The damage was done in a 2-2 home draw, which gave Union the chance to shut up shop at home and win through on away goals, which is exactly what happened in a 0-0 draw. Of Stuttgart’s seven wins last season, six of them did happen on home soil.
Anytime a side has to suffer relegation it leads to a sizeable shakeup in personnel. That’s happened here with Stuttgart as they have seen notable departures of defenders Benjamin Pavard and Ozan Kabak. Hannover, who bear the same nickname of Die Roten, were second from bottom last season in the Bundesliga. They picked up five wins (D6 L23), and two of those five victories happened in their final four games of the season. It was all too little too late at the end of the day though and it was just the two seasons that they managed to have a back up in the top tier. Across all of last season across all competitions, Hannover took just one away win.
Their one away win happened in a Cup game at Karlsruhe. On their travels last term Hannover earned just two away clean sheet. Overall in the Bundesliga, they conceded the joint-highest tally of goals which was 71 and incidentally just one more goal than Stuttgart conceded. Relegation is a costly business and Hannover have seen some of their better players move to top-flight teams. They haven’t even hit £5 million of spending though because that relegation was a massive financial hit for them.
