Sunderland News and Form

After suffering back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and Championship, Jack Ross has certainly steadied the ship since arriving at the Stadium of Light. However, the Black Cats will have been targeting automatic promotion before a ball was kicked, so to finish in fifth place will be somewhat disappointing.

Sunderland missed out on the top two by ending their season with two draws and two defeats. Their form ahead of the play-offs has been poor, as the Mackems have won just one of their past seven. After picking up a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light a few weeks back, Ross’ troops finished up with back-to-back 2-1 away defeats to Fleetwood Town and Southend United.

Portsmouth to Win Both Halves

Bet at Unibet

Despite their rocky recent form, Sunderland have been incredibly hard to beat at the Stadium of Light this term. The Black Cats have won 12, drawn ten and lost just one of their 23 home league fixtures. That solitary home defeat came to Coventry City last month, as they were on the wrong end of 5-4 thriller against the Sky Blues.

Sunderland will be a force to be reckoned with in the play-offs, especially with their home record being so good. The Black Cats are currently priced at 13/5 for promotion.

Portsmouth News and Form

Like Sunderland, Portsmouth will have been bitterly disappointed to have missed out on automatic promotion this season. Pompey’s fate was sealed after they were beaten 3-2 by Peterborough United in their penultimate game of the season. After that, Kenny Jackett’s side ended their league campaign with a 1-1 draw with Accrington Stanley at Fratton Park.

After winning four in a row, Portsmouth ran out of steam in the end, picking up just two points from their last three. However, that defeat to Peterborough is their only loss in any competition since a 2-1 league reverse to Charlton Athletic at The Valley back in early March.

Jackett’s troops have been outstanding away from home this season, accumulating a superb 45 points on the road, which is by far the best away record in the division. Pompey claimed an impressive 13 wins, along with six draws and just four defeats. Along the way, the club netted 41 times and shipped 29 on their travels.

Portsmouth, who have spent far too long in the third tier of English football, could be on the rise again. They have a very experienced manager in Jackett, and they will certainly fancy their chances of gaining promotion back to the Championship.

Sunderland v Portsmouth Predictions

Portsmouth win: Considering that Sunderland have lost just once at home in the league this term while Portsmouth have the best away record in League One, this will be a fascinating contest in Wearside. As always, the Black Cats will make themselves hard to beat, but I can see Pompey’s qualities shining through at the Stadium of Light. Have a punt on the visitors to edge a low-scoring affair on Saturday night.
