Our Sussex Stakes betting tips preview 2022 starts off by examining how favourites have gotten on in recent renewals.

Sussex Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

A good place to start when looking at Sussex Stakes tips is the recent performances by favourites. Four of the last six renewals were won by the favourite on the day.

The most recent of those was TOO DARN HOT who scored at even money in 2019. Last year’s winner was Alcohol Free from a fairly short 7/2 quote.

That has been the biggest takeaway from the last ten renewals – that it’s worth sticking towards the head of the market for Sussex Stakes tips.

Only two of the last ten renewals have been won by anything bigger than 11/4.

The longest-priced scorer of the Sussex Stakes in the last decade was HERE COMES WHEN who was a 20/1 shot in 2017.

This year’s favourite

The 2022 renewal of the Sussex Stakes sees a dominant favourite heading up the betting market. That’s BAAEED who is a heavy odds-on favourite at 2/11* (odds recorded at 18:49 GMT on July 25th, 2022 at Bet365).

If he has an off-day then it does at least offer some fair Sussex Stakes odds on the other main contenders like ALCOHOL FREE and ORDER OF AUSTRALIA.

Interestingly two of the last five renewals have been won by a horse of at least a 9/1 quote.

About the Sussex Stakes

The Sussex Stakes goes back to the inaugural run in 1841. Through the early days, it was a shorter 6f contest.

It was in 1878 that the race was moved up to the 1m distance which is its current trip.

It is arguably the top race at the Festival now having come out of the shadows of the Goodwood Cup and the Stewards’ Cup.

Another of the big changes that the Sussex Stakes went through was in 1960 when the fixture was opened to 4-year-olds and then fifteen years later it was opened up all the way to include 5-year-olds and above.

Sussex Stakes contenders – 27th July 2022

The ante-post Sussex Stakes odds sees the unbeaten BAAEED just dominating the entire landscape.

He is a quote of 2/11 odds-on to take the score* (odds recorded at 18:49 GMT on July 25th, 2022 at Bet365).

That’s not too surprising given his record and the 4-year-old doesn’t look like slowing up anytime soon.

It’s been eight wins from eight including a course and distance effort. The Willie Haggas-trained Based sets the standard in this one.

His two runs this year were at the top level in the Lockinge Stakes and most recently the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot.

Unfortunately, we don’t get to see him take on Palace Pier once again.

Who can stop Baaeed?

Last year’s winner ALCOHOL FREE is closest to the favourite in Sussex Stakes odds at 10/1* (odds recorded at 18:49 GMT on July 25th, 2022 at Bet365).

She rediscovered her winning touch last time out.

Alcohol Free turned the tables on Naval Crown at the Darley July Cup Stakes at Newmarket early last month.

She was beaten by Baaeed in the Lockinge Stakes in May and by that same revival in October’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

ORDER OF AUSTRALIA arrives in winning form and will probably be well-supported with place claims in Sussex Stakes odds.

There was a Group 2 score at the Curragh by him earlier in the month by a wide margin.

Order of Australia faced up to the might of Baaeed in last month’s Queen Anne Stakes and came up short by almost six lengths to the rival.

So looking ahead at Sussex Stakes tips, it’s arguably not the strongest of renewals and the presence of Baaeed gives it its slightly lop-sided angle.

It may be all about picking out a forecast selection or simply going to the each-way market.

Sussex Stakes Trends Glorious Goodwood 2022

For the next part of this Sussex Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event.

To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 1 fixture.

Sussex Stakes Trainer Statistics

Aiden O’Brien is the leading trainer from the last 20 renewals of the Sussex Stakes, taking four victories in that span. He’s generally been one that goes hard at this fixture.

The victories for O’Brien started with Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), Henrythenavigator (2008) and then followed Rip Van Winkle (2009) and The Gurkha (2016).

He has one entry that all hopes are hanging on for the 2022 Sussex Stakes. That’s Order Of Australia at 12/1* (odds recorded at 18:49 GMT on July 25th, 2022 at Bet365).

The only other active trainer with an entry in this year’s renewal who has previously won the race is Andrew Balding.

He’s claimed victory in the fixture and his hopes are on the exciting filly and last year’s winner ALCOHOL FREE.

Balding’s other success in the Sussex Stakes was in 2017 with Here Comes When.

Sussex Stakes Jockey Statistics

Two jockeys are heading to the start in the Sussex Stakes 2022 renewal that have won the fixture twice before.

That’s Frankie Dettori and Jim Crowley. The latter has the better strike rate of the two.

Dettor is on 50/1 outsider ANGEL BLEU for Wednesday’s fixture, while Crowley is likely to be far more prominent* (odds recorded at 18:49 GMT on July 25th, 2022 at Bet365)..

Jim Crowley has the ride of the red-hot Sussex Stakes betting favourite BAAEED.

Ryan Moore, who goes on Order Of Australia, is the only other jockey in the field to have had a previous taste of success in this.

Other Key Sussex Stakes Trends

We do want to go back to the trend of favourites putting in strong shows at the Sussex Stakes.

Only in one of the last fifteen renewals has the race favourite been outside of the top three.

Nine of the last fourteen renewals of this Group 1 have been won by a favourite. So again, this all points strongly towards Baaeed.

  • Each of the last 20 winners had been in the Top 3 last time out
  • The last 20 renewals were won by a horse that had made between 2 and starts in the previous 90 days
  • None of the last 20 winners had been below a 103 OR for the season
  • A place finish had been recorded within the last two starts by each of the last 20 winners
  • All 20 winners had collected a previous Group victory
  • The last win by each of the last 20 renewals was at either 7f or 1m
  • All but one of the 20 winners had been within the first five of the betting market
  • All but one of the last 20 renewals were won by a horse that had not been in a Group 2 last time out

Sussex Stakes 2021 Review

It was ALCOHOL FREE who got her nose in front last year to win the Sussex Stakes as the 7/2 second favourite.

She did take a little while to settle in but started pulling together a challenge a couple of furlongs from home.

Once Alcohol Free got herself into gear there was no stopping her within the final furlong.

POETIC FLARE was last year’s favourite in Sussex Stakes odds and was right in contention.

He wandered slightly off line 1f out as he was tiring and didn’t have any final gear to find, finishing almost two lengths back of the winner.

Filling out the places was SNOW LANTERN who stayed on well although was never going to improve the finishing spot.

Snow Lantern didn’t get the cleanest of runs.
