Sweden Women v Canada Women Betting Tips – Women’s World Cup, 24th June 8.00pm

Both Sweden and Canada finished second in their respective groups. Canada could not quite get the better of the Netherlands in what was a good competitive duel between the two. As for Sweden, they were up against their major threat of the USA in their group, and did not have enough to go one step further and claim a group win. This looks to be a very evenly matched round of 16 tie. Read our predictions for Sweden Women v Canada Women.

Sweden Women News and Form

While both of these had tough group stage campaigns because of having to deal with strong opposition in the race for the top spot, Sweden likely always knew that second place to the USA was a realistic outcome. Sweden started with a 2-0 victory over Chile, before beating Thailand 5-1. So that left the battle for the top spot in their final group stage game against the USA. It was a winner take all situation and frankly Sweden never got close to pulling off the success that they needed. Sweden suffered a 2-0 defeat in that game, and even though they can look at the second goal against them being highly controversial, they didn’t look as if they were really going to break down the Americans.

Sweden were on a four-match winning streak prior to that game against the USA. What you always get from the Swedish team in major competitions is generally a very organised and physically strong outfit. Sweden have taken three clean sheets in their last five games. But it is interesting to have a look at their World Cup record, because despite being one of the stronger teams in the women’s game, they have struggled to produce at the biggest stage. Sweden are W2 D3 L2 in their last seven World Cup fixtures, a game with both of those wins in a sequence happening in this campaign. Four years ago they reached this round of 16 and suffered a big defeat against Germany.

Key-Facts – Sweden Women v Canada Women

  • Sweden have won four of their last five games
  • the winner will play Germany in the quarter-finals
  • Canada have lost just one of their last nine games

Canada Women News and Form

The Canadians have equally been assured of themselves as the Swedes have been. They too missed out on a top spot in their group though. Canada took back-to-back wins over Cameroon and New Zealand, both successes happening with a clean sheet. That left their final group stage action coming down to a battle for top spot against the Netherlands. As expected Canada gave a good account of themselves but ended up losing 2-1 to the European champions. But still, if you look at their current form and they have been really good this year. The Canadians have taken a clean sheet in all but two of their last nine games. They conceded more goals in a game against the Netherlands than they had done in their previous eight games played.

Their superstar striker Christine Sinclair got her first goal of the tournament which will have eased any tension off of her shoulders. That was the fifth World Cup that Sinclair has scored in. She is one of the game’s greats and now needs just three more goals to be the top international scorer in the women’s game. Four years ago, Canada were World Cup hosts, and they reached the quarter-finals on that occasion where they were stopped by England. Canada have won four of their last eight World Cup fixtures now (D2 L2). They will know that they are going to have to dig deep and that they will get a very stern challenge against Sweden in this one.

Sweden Women v Canada Women Predictions

Canada to win: this is actually a really tough game to call because they look evenly matched. Both are physically strong and both can stroke the ball around when they need to. Canada have looked slightly the better of the two in forward play, so it is for us, Canada.
