Switzerland News and Form

Switzerland put on a pretty good show against Portugal, as they were expected to do. They lost 3-1 in the semi-final, but that was, by and large, down to the bulldozer that is Cristiano Ronaldo firing off a hattrick. Switzerland are now W4 D1 L4 in their last nine games played now. It is their only loss in their last four played. They obviously did a superb job in their Nations League group to have gotten this far, upsetting the odds by beating Belgium to top spot in their group campaign.

The Swiss are not a goal shy team. They have netted at least two goals in five of their last nine played. They have scored eleven goals in their last four games played. In their last nine games, they have only failed to score twice and one of those was their 1-0 loss at Wembley against England back in September. The Swiss, as they showed in World Cup 2018 qualification and again in the Nations League group, are a decent, energetic and positive side. They may have the edge over England in the energy department, with the Three Lions having gone through extra time.

England News and Form

England really never got themselves going against the Netherlands in their semi-final. It was probably their worst performance under Gareth Southgate. They just looked tired, physically and mentally. They were heavily outclassed in the game, aside from the odd bits of pressure here and there. The Three Lions didn’t manage a shot on target after the 60-minute mark and that includes through extra time as well. At the back England were embarrassingly bad, gifting the Netherlands their goals in extra time. Ben Chilwell was the only defender who came away with a shred of credibility.

Will Gareth Southgate use the chance to look at alternative options in the back line? Will he change things in midfield? With them having gone through extra time, he may have to. Their makeshift midfielder of Fabian Delph, Declan Rice and Ross Barkley struggled all game. Southgate did rest key players from Spurs and Liverpool who had played recently in the Champions League Final. Maybe he was hoping to save them for the final. England have scored in each of their last six games played now, with two clean sheets recorded in their last six. They are probably going to come under some big pressure in this one.

Switzerland v England Predictions

Switzerland to win: Of the semi-final performances, Switzerland’s was much better than England. They actually looked pretty decent threat. The Three Lions looked disorganised and jaded and could be there for the taking after being out on their feet after extra time against the Dutch. Switzerland to win.
