McIlroy set for strong Sawgrass challenge

Golf Betting

The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass will test, frustrate and bring out the best in players as the Tour heads to Florida this week. This is a course where no style really has a big advantage and there will be a couple of new tests as well, with the water hazard being expanded between holes six and seven, while hole twelve has now evolved into a par four which is fully driveable but situates a water hazard. The famous 17th hole, the island hole remains fully intact and is the great challenge of the course.

The big guns are out for the FedExCup points in this one and the defending champion is Jason Day. All but one of the current top 25 players in the world are heading to TPC Sawgrass this week and looking down the field a bit further, all but five of the top 60 are there. World number one Dustin Johnson goes a 7/1 favourite at Boylesports in the field and of course, with the insane form that he has been pounding out this season, it’s only natural. That having been said though, his record at Sawgrass does open up the market, because he has never finished in the top 25 at the tournament.

Do you skip past that and look at his current form though? It’s a real toss-up, a real teaser for The Players Championship golf betting this week. Newlywed Rory McIlroy is likely going to be a strong contender for the title in hs one and he has solid form going. He has landed in the top ten in each of his last seven stroke-play events now and has three top ten finishes in his last four cracks at the Players with a 70.06 scoring average. He has to be in the mix at Sawgrass and has far better numbers there than Johnson does for sure.

Jason Day is the defending champion, but his season has been well below his standards for the bulk of the season. Of course, there have been the issues with a family illness which has been the major distraction for him, but he hasn’t looked much of a threat regardless of that. So he’s probably worth avoiding to defend his title. Since winning the Masters this season, Sergio Garcia has been out resting up. He is the all-time earnings leader at The Players actually and has to be worth a flutter at 6/4 at bet365 for a top ten finish.

Rickie Fowler looks an interesting punt. The 2015 winner looked overwhelmed in last season’s title defence and all of that probably took something away from his focus. No such issues for him this time around though and he has been putting a strong season together and could make a decent run on this, and is a 7/4 option for a top ten finish. Justin Rose has a couple of top twenty finishes in the last three visits to Sawgrass, while Martyn Kaymer is running solidly enough at the moment to get into the top ten, while Jordan Spieth, who has yet to make the cut in the last two attempts at The Players Championship will be hoping to get back to the form that took him to his T4 on his Sawgrass debut in 2014.
