Thurles Saturday 14:40: Betfred offer 11/4 racing odds on Johnny Little Legs – 21st March 2020

Improving Goulane Jessie a good fit for success at Thurles

Horse Racing Betting

The Thurles 14:40 racing betting action is on a handicap hurdle (80-95). There are 19 entered for the big contest for which there are a lot of claims.

Nothing less would be expected in such a big field. But it is Johnny Little Legs who is holding favouritism at the head of the market. This is a 2m 6f trip for the starters.

Johnny Little Legs

A second-place finish in a 2m hurdle at Thurles in early March was the last effort that Johnny Little Legs put in. There was plenty of improved form shown from him on that run.

So heading into this return to Thurles, progress will be expected to come from the low-mileage horse.

There will be questions about the longer trip, however, but he is the 3/1 favourite* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 21:12 GMT on Friday, 20th March 2020).

Goulane Jessie
9/2

Betfred

Goulane Jessie

Goulane Jessie has not been out since late January when she took a second-place finish at Fairyhouse. That was a very strong effort by her on a 3m trip.

She looks far more comfortable over the hurdles than in chase action and should be a major contender. Goulane Jessie banked a season win at Fairyhouse in mid-December as well.

She will handle the distance and brings excellent claims at 9/2 for the contest* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 21:12 GMT on Friday, 20th March 2020).

Duhallow Paddy

Duhallow Paddy could well be keen to get back to the hurdles after a failed chase effort at Navan in mid-January.

He did, however, win off this mark in a Galway chase in October last year, which he followed up with a second on a switch back to hurdles in his following race.

Duhallow Paddy was a beaten favourite in his last effort and returned after a break which could have done him the power of good.

Memory Of Youth

With plenty of improving form to bring to the table, Memory Of Youth will pique a lot of interest for this contest at 13/2* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 21:12 GMT on Friday, 20th March 2020).

Has been getting better and better and put in a career-best at Clonmel in late February taking a third-place finish in a 3m hurdle. She has been handling the recent move to handicapping very well.

Sporty Yankee

Gordon Elliot is still waiting for Sporty Yankee to get his first score under his charge. He was at Wolverhampton for his last race where he finished towards the back of the pack in a Flat contest.

Sporty Yankee had been carrying decent hurdle form before that with a couple of second places and a fourth. Will probably be back at home and back in form over them in this contest.

Worthy Mentions

NEED FOR GOLD was fourth at Navan earlier this month in a hurdle contest. That was a strong showing from him actually and the seven-year-old delivered a lot of improvement in that run. Will likely have to find even more in this one to score.

On a return to Thurles, OUR MAJELLA could bring some big each-way claims. At course and distance in October and November, she got into the top four on what were her first two handicap races. Pulled up at Limerick in January, but the venue form is there.

Predictions & Tips

MEMORY OF YOUTH brings some fair claims and has appeal for us in this race. She has done extremely well in the early stages of her handicapping. Can easily progress further.

As for the favourite JOHNNY LITTLE LEGS, there does appear to be further improvement to come from him. He is the form horse and should be a major contender, but there is a question over distance.

OUR MAJELLA easily appeals as an each-way selection. She went very well under the handicap in her two runs at Hurdles in the autumn. So she should enjoy a return.

Our outright pick is GOULANE JESSIE who has been knocking on the door across her last two hurdle appearances. She does take on extra weight but still looks like she needs a lot of respect in this company.
