Golf: Amid injury worries and his private life becoming public, Tiger Woods has confirmed that he will step out to compete in the Open at St Andrews in July. It will all be dependent on him recovering from the neck injury that has been hampering him lately, and which forced him to retire from the Players Championships last month. Woods should be back on the fairways before the Open though, as he has pencilled into his schedule the US Open which takes place in June at Pebble Beach. Woods is no stranger to winning at the prestigious St Andrews course, as he has triumphed twice there during his career, and would make history in being the first golfer to secure a hat trick of Open wins at the course.
Woods first stepped back into the public spotlight at The Masters, in which he displayed some of that old magic, as well as some fantastic new driving ability. There had been much speculation that he would not be able to handle the competitive nature of the tournament after being away from the game for about five months, but that didn’t stop Tiger as he rallied to a fine fourth placed finish. Pebble Beach and St Andrews have been graced with some of the most vintage Tiger Woods performances in the past, and he will be hungry to get back into the swing of things, as he goes in search of the 15th major of his career.
So, with one of golf’s modern greats filing his entry for the Open at St Andrews, it will of course encourage a lot of betting on him again, just as it did at the Majors. While the world awaits an announcement of when exactly he will be back in action after pulling out of The Players just over a week ago, the Majors are still on the cards for him. Against all the adversity and now having to recover from injury, could put him back in the betting, but as shown in the odds at online bookmakers at the Majors, he simply strolled straight back into the tournament as favourite.
