Tottenham News and Form – Can Spurs win first European Cup title?

Spurs have one of their biggest nights in their history coming up. This is their first ever European Cup Final. If they win this fixture then they would join an exclusive club of just five other clubs to have won all three of UEFA’s major competitions. Spurs are the first newcomers to the European Cup final since Chelsea made it there back in 2008. They have made it through to Madrid after an epic and dramatic comeback in the second half of their second leg away from home at Ajax.

After having lost 1-0 at home in the first leg, Spurs were 2-0 down at half time in second leg in Amsterdam. They looked down and out. However, a second-half hat trick from Lucas Moura saw Spurs prevail on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate tie. The incredible turnaround made them just the second team in the history of the competition to have recovered from losing the first leg of a semi-final tie at home in the history of the Champions League. What a night it was, but can they follow up on Saturday with a win?

Can Spurs land first win in Spain?

Spurs have made six previous trips to Spain and have yet to collect a win in the country, having returned a D3 L3 record from those games. In Madrid specifically, Tottenham are D2 L1 from previous visits to Madrid (all against Real Madrid). Before their semi-final clash with Ajax this season, Spurs had beaten Borussia Dortmund in the round of sixteen and then had taken an away goal win over Manchester City in the semi-finals. So it hasn’t been an easy route to the final for them. They only got past the group stage thanks to a 1-1 tie at Barcelona on matchday six.

Spurs hold a W6 D2 L4 record overall in this season’s Champions League. The Lilywhites are D1 L3 from their three previous games against English sides in the competition. There will be a question mark over their form. They went just W2 D1 L5 in their last eight games of the season in all competitions, keeping just one clean sheet. They are W1 D1 L3 in their last five. Spurs have only drawn five games (of 57 played) this season in all competitions. Spurs trail Liverpool 48-79 from their previous 170 meetings. The Lilywhites have taken just the one win in their last 14 games against the Reds, losing nine.

Tottenham v Liverpool Head to Head

Liverpool won both EPL meetings 2-1 against Spurs this season
Liverpool have won 9 and lost 1 of their last 14 games against Tottenham
Both teams have scored in seven of the last eight meetings
Five of the last six meetings have ended up over 2.5 goals

Key-Facts – Tottenham v Liverpool

  • Liverpool lead the head to head 79-48 against Spurs
  • Liverpool have won 13 of their last 14 games

Liverpool News and Form – Can Liverpool lift the trophy?

Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City, despite such a powerfully consistent season. Can they put the Champions League trophy in the cabinet? Liverpool have won five previous European Cup titles, but they missed out on their sixth twelve months ago when they collapsed in a heap against Real Madrid. So they will be keen to make big amends for that, this time around.

Just like Spurs, Liverpool needed a huge comeback in their semi-final tie this season. They had lost 3-0 at the Nou Camp against Barcelona, then turned the tie around with a stunning 4-0 home success at Anfield. That put them through to their 9th European Cup Final. It is the third time they have made a UEFA final in consecutive seasons. There are only two teams in history who have suffered successfully European Cup Final defeats (Juventus and Valencia).

Can Liverpool beat English opposition again?

From their previous UEFA Finals, Liverpool have a record of W11 L9. Liverpool have lost two of their last four games in Madrid (W1 D1) and those defeats were in their last two visits there (against Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid). Barcelona have suffered a loss in four of their last five visits to Spain. Liverpool’s record in Spain is W7 D5 L6. In their last five games in Europe against English opponents, Liverpool are W3 D2.

Each of the last six games in European competition that Liverpool have lost (all inside their last 14 played) have happened outside of England. The Reds are W7 D8 L5 in their previous encounters with fellow English sides in Europe. Of them and Spurs, Liverpool finished the season strong winning 13 of their last 14 games played (L1). They have taken a clean sheet in four of their last six played. Liverpool have scored at least two goals in 13 of their last 14 games across all competitions as well.

Tottenham v Liverpool Predictions

Liverpool to win: Of the two sides it was clearly Liverpool who were carrying the better, stronger form of the two at the back end of the season. They were scoring well and picking up clean sheets and the Reds are likely to have the beating of Spurs once again. Liverpool will be extra keen after their nightmare twelve months ago.
