Fury delivers a masterclass

It was a masterclass from Fury in the early hours of Sunday morning. Many felt the Gypsy King had been denied a win in December 2018 when the two met for the first time.

That fight ended in a draw, which prompted bookmaker Paddy Power to refund all lost stakes on a Fury win because of the controversial decision.

In the seventh round of the weekend’s rematch, Wilder’s corner threw in the towel after Fury had pinned the American in a neutral corner. That gave Fury a TKO result that gave him the WBC World Heavyweight belt.

Fury had already put the Bronze Bomber down in the third and the fifth round of the contest.

AJ Next for Fury?

Anthony Joshua holds all of the other heavyweight title belts. Are we finally going to see them coming together?

After having dethroned divisional-dominant fighters in Vladimir Klitschko and now Deontay Wilder, there is little doubt that Fury wants AJ next.

Fury can currently be taken at 4/9 to beat Joshua, with AJ at 13/8* (betting odds taken from Betfair on February 23rd, 2020 at 20:59)

If that were to happen next, it would present the chance of history being created. The winner would become the first fighter ever to hold all four heavyweight belts at the same time. It would be one of the greatest moments in boxing’s rich history.

Will Wilder get in the way?

One slight complication before going down that path is Wilder. Deontay Wilder has an option to trigger a rematch against Fury if he so wants. He has 30 days from Sunday’s fight to make the call on a rematch.

But after the beating that he took in Las Vegas on the weekend, will he want that? That was the first career loss for the 34-year-old and he didn’t look right for the fight from the off.

He was boxing at the highest weight of his career and had come into the Fury rematch off the back of a really poor performance in a scrap against veteran Luis Ortiz. Only Wilder’s famed right hand had spared his blushes against the Cuban.

Fury is at 4/11 to win a rematch against Wilder, with the American at 15/8* (betting odds taken from Betfair on February 23rd, 2020 at 20:59).

Fury the front runner for SPOTY 2020

So to the 2020 Sports Personality Of the Year Betting. Wilder is now 2/1 after taking heavy action on the market after his TKO win over Wilder* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 23rd, 2020 at 20:59).

This is an Olympic year, of course, leaving some wiggle room for some major moves in the market, the most likely of which would be from either cyclist Laura Kenny or sprinter Dina Asher-Smith who are 10/1 and 7/1 respectively in the market* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 23rd, 2020 at 20:59).

Swimmer Adam Peaty is a 12/1 option as well who could come out of the 2020 Olympics into the picture* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 23rd, 2020 at 20:59).

Lewis Hamilton could join Michael Schumacher as the joint-most successful driver in the history of F1 with another title this year, which would be his fourth in a row. Given how dominant the Mercedes looked in February preseason practice, there’s a fair chance of that.

The Fury v Joshua variable

But for now, it is Tyson Fury who is all the rage in SPOTY betting. That was something special that he pulled off in Las Vegas.

Interestingly Anthony Joshua, who won back all his three belts with a rematch success over Andy Ruiz, is a 25/1 option in the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year betting.

But how that would shift if he faces Fury later in the year and collects the win, making that boxing history.
