Wilder triggers rematch clause

The date for Fury v Wilder III is apparently July 18th, 2020. It will back in the USA, but it’s not been confirmed. However, there is now definitely going to be the third meeting between Tyson Fury and Deontary Wilder.

Last month Fury totally outclassed his opponent, inflicting the first defeat of the Bronze Bomber’s career upon him.

Fury had dominated from the first bell. The job was finished in the 7th round when Wilder’s corner threw in the towel. Wilder, famed for his hammer of a right hand, just never was able to lay a glove on the tactically sound Fury and fell to the TKO.

Bronze Bomber’s blame game

Wilder went on afterwards to blame the weight of his walk-on costume as the reason for his poor performance in the ring. Looking like an evil Power Ranger, the costume apparently weighed 40lb, and Wilder said that it had taken everything out of his legs.

But that doesn’t excuse a poor showing in his previous fight. Wilder’s struggles against Fury did in all fairness, came after a tame effort against veteran Luiz Ortiz in his previous fight. Wilder was outboxed in that as well. However, the right hand of Wilder saved his blushes against the Cuban.

Fury odds on to win the rematch

Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs) had 30 days to trigger a rematch clause with Wilder. According to promoter Bob Arum, the Bronze Bomber has done that. But the American is a big 11/4 underdog for the rematch* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 02:52 GMT on Tuesday, March 3rd 2020).

Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) took the WBC heavyweight title in that Las Vegas victory over Wilder. He is 2/7 odds on current to beat Wilder again* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes at 02:52 GMT on Tuesday, March 3rd 2020).

For many, a big unification fight against Anthony Joshua, who holds the other three main belts in the division, was next in the natural progression of things was. But Wilder, who wants to “rise like a phoenix” has other ideas.
