While the core of their team like captain Diego Godin and strike force Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani the wrong side of 30, Uruguay still look a good contender at the Copa America. They had a bit of a slump towards the back end of 2018, suffering four straight international friendly defeats by a one-goal margin. They have responded with three straight clean sheet wins through but they have been against weaker opposition in Uzbekistan, Thailand and Panama. So it’s hard to read where they are at right now.
Uruguay are a strong side and they will bring a good physical presence of course to things. They have had the same head coach, Oscar Tabarez, who delivers the same thing again and again. The Ecuadorians have suffered three defeats in their last eight games. In that spell though they have just been struggling to get the win on the board as well. Ecuador have won just two of their last eight games now and in their 2019 matches are (D2 L2). Wins over Peru and Panama in friendlies from November 2018 are their only wins in their last eight games played. So it’s not particularly prolific form having been delivered by them.
In their last five games, Ecuador have taken one clean sheet and that was from a 0-0 draw against Honduras earlier this year, not the most difficult of opponents. Ecuador have failed to score in three of their last seven games now. They did manage to edge Brazil in getting out of the group at the last edition of the Copa America.
