US Open 2017 Golf Betting – Nationality Markets

Small nationality markets can return nice profit

Because golf outright betting can be a bit of a minefield, a great way to break down your US Open 2017 Golf betting is by looking at the nationality markets. There is the popular market of Winning Nationality at Ladbrokes which basically gives you three options – American 11/10, European 15/8 or the Rest of the World at 5/2. That’s a pretty straight forward market and there isn’t a lot of meat on the bone in that one from a betting perspective because look at the tally of winning nationalities from the past thirteen editions of the tournament:

American – 5
European – 4
Rest of the World – 4

So that’s a tight spread for you. Another way to approach nationality betting for the US Open 2017 is going to options like Top English, Top French, Top German and the Top Scot markets. These are smaller fields than trying to plough your way through the tournament outright and because of the nature of these markets, it is well worth taking on the favourites in them. That’s basically because it doesn’t take much in golf for one player to have an off week at all. So there is value in opposition.

Top England
Justin Rose is a 9/4 option in the market to be top Englishman and the US Open 2017 and can be attacked in the betting market. There are some good youngsters in the field to oppose Rose with, notably Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton and Matthew Fitzpatrick, along with the likes of Danny Willett and Andrew Johnston. This is a pretty big market still for what we are looking at but the putting game of Hatton may be a huge bonus on the greens at Erin Hills in this one if you wanted a gamble.

Top Scot
This is where the nationality golf betting markets can really shine. This is where it really gets good because there are just three names in the mix in this market. Martin Laird is 11/8 outright favourite following by Russell Knox and Richie Ramsay. Of the three of them, you have Knox with the best US Open record and his price has been trimmed in from 6/4 but even at 11/8 he makes a great punt in this market.

Top Irish
Again, this is a great small market to have a look at here. You have Rory McIlroy, who is one of the front runners in the outright winner market of course here, but he has just come back from his rib injury and may not be at 100%. So there is a temptation to oppose him here and that leaves you picking from Shane Lowry, Graeme McDowell and Paul Dunne. Dunne is the big 16/1 shot in this four-man field but has a fantastic short game which could serve him well at Erin Hills. Lowry is probably the biggest threat to McIlroy though at 3/1 in this market.

Top German
You have an even smaller field in this one, a two-horse race between Martin Kaymer at 2/7 and Stephan Jaeger at 5/2. How can you not be tempted to go for the value on Jaeger because of that? Yes, Kaymer may well be suited to Erin Hills and is expected to carry on in some good form, but why not. Jaeger has been carrying decent form on the Web.Com Tour and again, it’s just a two-man field

Top French
You have three Frenchmen in the field, Alex Levy, Gregory Bourdy and Joël Stalter. The latter you can count ou because he’s not in form and this is his debut at a Major. With Erin Hills being a testing course, patience is going to be needed and Bourdy is value because of his experience at links and is a nice 11/8 price to oppose favourite Levy at 10/11.

Top Swede
Just a four-man field in the Swedish market, with Henrik Stenson odds-on favourite at Ladbrokes to top his compatriots of Alex Noren, David Lingmerth and Daniel Chopra. It may be hard to oppose world number six Stenson, but he hasn’t had a great season and hasn’t hit the heights of his game at the US Open before. Lingmerth looks great value here with some trending form and having landed a 12th at last year’s US Open. At an 11/2 punt, he is worth opposing Stenson with. Alex Noren has been in cracking form though and at 7/4 is probably the more stable option.
