Day to put difficulties behind to him to conquer Erin Hills?

The second Major of the golf calendar is with us this week as the best in the world all descend on Erin Hill in Wisconsin. Twelve months ago the US Open was blighted with the whole debacle surrounding Dustin Johnson’s rules infraction so the USGA will be hoping that things go a lot smoother this time around. Erin Hill is a new course, having only been constructed eleven years ago, so this is a hit or miss situation for them. Players have given pretty mixed reactions about the course and for most players turning up, this will be their debut there on the links-style course.

The only major thing that Erin Hills has hosted before is the 2011 US Amateur and aside from anyone having played in that, this is uncharted territory for most of the field. The course is a massive 8,000-yard affair, with unforgiving deep rough and some severe bunkers (138 of them and no flat-bottom ones) as well. As a positive though, players will be attacking the course off the tee because the fairways are wider than usual and the tournament goes over a par 72 (the last US Open to be so was Pebble Beach in 1992). Dustin Johnson is back to defend the title he won, despite all the furore around his infraction last year.

Will DJ be able to defend, the first player to do so since Curtis Strange did it in 1989? Rory McIlroy is in the field after his rib injury, but it remains to be seen just what kind of shape that he will be in since he hasn’t players since The Players. Among the frontrunners, Jordan Spieth played at the at 2011 US Amateur at Erin Hill, but he has been keen to push the fact that he can’t remember much about the course from all that long ago. With Spieth among the recent winners like Martin Kaymer, Justin Rose and Dustin Johnson, you are probably looking to one of the top players in the game to edge the field.

US Open Preview

So this is new territory for most and that makes it very interesting and it keeps the field wide open. There is no Phil Mickelson for the tournament, who misses because of his daughter’s Graduation and it is more than likely that a strong start is going to be needed because playing catch up on the course could become a tough thing. Here we preview the main runners.

Dustin Johnson
Pre-tournament favourite at Boylesports, however, the price on him may not have great appeal for punters. This is a mammoth task to win this event and the rarity of players winning it back to back doesn’t favour Johnson. He goes off with 2015 champions Jordan Spieth and 2014 champion Martin Kaymer to begin his title defence in a great group. There’s no question about his form this year, but his results have just been slipping backwards since Wells Fargo and he missed the cut last time out at the Memorial Tournament. Undoubted class and power, but maybe going the wrong way in form and it’s a huge ask to defend a title.

Rory McIlroy
He is back after his rib injury which saw him skip the PGA Championship and the Memorial Tournament. This will be his first time at Erin Hills, but he is one of the ones who has said positive things about the course. McIlroy, a four-time Major champion clearly has the form and the quality to attack this, but from a betting perspective, he is probably worth a bit of a swerve in this having been on the sidelines and therefore having missed some crucial competitive warm up action.

Jason Day
The Australian looks to be trending at the right time and is with a 5/4 punt at Boylesports in the top ten finish market. He was defeated in a play off at Byron Nelson recently and he went well after a first round shocker at Muirfield Village to pull himself into a top twenty finish. This is a player who is still recovering from a tough year in his personal life and it wasn’t until Sawgrass recently that he said he was in a rebuilding stage. A player for the big stage, it would be something if he came through here.

Jordan Spieth
Spieth is one of the few players who has managed to get in some action at Erin Hills before, back in 2011. He has stressed that’s not an advantage because he doesn’t remember and that’ fair enough. Spieth has been striking the ball well in the 2017 season, but his short putting game leaves a lot to be desired and unless there is a dramatic change around in that this week, it may be something that keeps him from the title. It’s been a mixed season from him, and lacking a bit of consistency.

Jon Rahm
What a rise in the game it has been for him and he can easily follow in the footsteps of the likes of McIlroy and Spieth. He landed his first PGA Tour win this year with an eagle on the last hole at Torrey Pines and quietly behind Dustin Johnson’s form this year, Rahm has been right there on his tail. He has pushed DJ hard this season at the WGC Mexico and Texas events and that says a lot about him. The 22-year-old is going to need to keep his cool head to get in the mix here and just think back 12 months ago when he was T23 as an amateur at Oakmont. Rahm is 4/1 at Boylesports for a Top Five Finish.

Rickie Fowler
Fowler looks pretty set and ready to grab a Major soon. He was well in contention after three rounds at the Masters this year and he choked a bit on the final round but should be better for that experience. He went well at Muirfield Village, going him T2 and just couldn’t get the better of winner Jason Dufner on the day, but Flower played very well. He didn’t get a great warm up with a missed cut at the St Jude Classic which all came on the back of a poor start. But he did show good temperament to at least try and rally from that. He is a 9/2 option at Boylesports in the top five finish market.

US Open Golf Betting 2017 Prediction

We would be looking for a strong start from a player in this one and a cool head. Driving accuracy isn’t an issue but short range putting is going to be. Rickie Fowler is a big temptation for a punt this week for the Major action as he has all aspects of his game going well. He just needs to find a ruthlessness on Sunday if he is in the picture. Jon Rahm is well worth a top five finish for the tournament because he is trending so well and just can’t seem to put a foot wrong. For us, Jason Day seems close to putting it all together again and with him being a strong Major player, then he has to represent some value in the each way market.
