Brooks Koepka 10/1 to defend in 2020 PGA Championship golf odds

Will it be Brooks Koepka again? The American is the two-time defending champion.

Only one player in the history of the PGA Championship has managed to win three consecutive titles at the event. That was Walter Hagen before the stroke play era.

Koepka did have a busy month of July. He started at the Memorial Tournament, his first event in a while and finished well down the field. A missed cut at the 3M Open then followed.

But he roared back into form over the weekend when he took a T2 at the WGC FedEx St Jude.

In 2018 Koepka had been around 22/1 in PGA Championship Golf Odds to win. A year later he was half that price pre-tournament.

For 2020 US PGA Championship Golf Betting Odds Brooks Koepka is currently at 10/1 pre-tournament* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

Interestingly before landing each of his previous PGA Championship titles, Koepka had collected a top-five finish the week before.

Given his positive result over the weekend, it could be a trend to keep in mind for golf betting.

Will world number one Justin Thomas land the title?

Justin Thomas is on top of the world at the moment and he has been in cracking form. He returned to action in July with a top-twenty finish at the Memorial Tournament.

But then he went even better as she scored a win at the St Jude on Sunday.

He has managed, once before, to collect back to back victories in his tour.

Thomas is right up there at the head of the market at 10/1 with Koepka* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

Thomas is well on top of his game at the moment, he’s confident and if he was to score at Harding Park it would be his fourth title of the season.

Can Rory McIlroy rediscover his form?

Rory McIlroy has been struggling to hit the top of his game since his return to action.

His best finish since the PGA Tour restart was a T11 at the Travelers Championship at the end of June.

One positive for him that fits trends of PGA Championship winners, is that McIlroy has won this season.

McIlroy struggled last week at the St Jude which won’t install a great deal of confidence in backing him.

He has all the tools when he’s on his game of course, but others may be preferred as he’s 14/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

John Rahm

Jon Rahm has had the number one spot in the world this season. He achieved that when he scored the recent win at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

At TPC Southwind last week for the St Jude he couldn’t carry that winning form over and he finished T52.

But there was a big fight back from Rahm in that event even, as he carded 66 on his final round there.

So he had freed up a bit by the end of that and with him having won before on a similar course to Harding Park (Torrey Pines) there’s a chance that the Spaniard will be in the running.

Jon Rahm is a convincing 14/1 quote in 2020 PGA Championship Golf Odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August)

First Round Leader Odds

Justin Thomas 20/1
Brooks Koepka 20/1

Bryson DeChambeau 33/1
Xander Schauffele 33/1
Dustin Johnson 33/1
Webb Simpson 35/1
Patrick Cantlay 35/1
Rickie Fowler 40/1

Bryson DeChambeau

One of the form players of 2020 has been Bryson Dechambeau. He was coming in hot just before the Tour was suspended and then he came back strong as well.

On his return DeChambeau collected three straight top-ten finishes before peaking that with a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in early July.

But quickly following that peak was a valley as he slumped to a missed cut at the Memorial Tournament and then posted a T30 at the St Jude.

He’s gone a bit chilly for a 16/1 option* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

Some PGA Championship Trends

  • 6 of the last 10 winners have been American
  • 8 of the last 10 winners were in their 20’s
  • Only 2 of the last 10 winners were not inside the top 25
  • 8 of the last 10 winners had won a tournament previously in the season

Does Tiger Woods have a challenge in him?

There will be renewed interest in Tiger Woods of course after winning the 15th major of his career at Augusta in April last year.

So can he turn it on and get the 16th under his belt?

There were some positive signs from Woods at the start of the season.

Since the restart of the action this year, Woods has had the one tournament, finishing down in 40th at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in the middle of July.

He is down as a current 33/1 option pre-tournament* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

Not working in his favour is that 12 of the last 17 major golf tournaments have been won by a first-timer.

At the PGA Championship, approximately two thirds of the last 34 winners were first time major winners.

Big-hitting Xander Schauffele a threat

Harding Park is probably going to embrace the big hitters. So we will have some considerations over Xander Schauffele.

He comes back into action with a bit of form having collected a T6 result at the St Jude last weekend.

Schauffele has been really consistent with his major performances, so he has to be kept on side for 2020 PGA Championship golf betting odds.

In five of his last eleven major events, Schauffele has landed in the top-six.

The distance that he has off the tee could get him close and he’s a decent prosoption at 18/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

2020 PGA Championship Golf Odds Predictions

Justin Thomas checks a lot of the boxes for us in PGA Championship golf odds.

He’s the right age to fit the main trends and he scored a win this season, and it was a recent one as well which gives him big claims here. Will it be the first major for Thomas?

We have to pull Jon Rahm into the picture as well. He is another that fits a bulk of the trends, except for the nationality.

So we may just have to play it cautiously on him as a 3/1 option for a Top 5 Finish* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

We will dip down the field a little bit further now in the Top 5 Finish market at the 15/2 on Patrick Reed* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 05:19 GMT on Tuesday, 4th August).

Reed too has had a win this season and has a had a recent top-twenty finish and is also the right age.

Incidentally all but one of the last 10 majors that have been held in the USA have been won by a home-grown player.

So the trends are there for Thomas and Reed but we can’t dismiss the current threat of Rahm at all.
