Race Details

This is Race 2 from Belmont Park on Saturday. This is a Claiming race which is at 1m 110y. The race is open to 3 year olds and above and it’s a big field of 15 declared. The winner takes almost $30k.

Race Favourite

Heading up the market as the current favourite is SHADOW RIDER at 5/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). He has won six races from 1m to 1m 1f so this is right in his wheelhouse.

His last run was at Aqueduct over a 1m trip in March when he was fifth as he struggled in better company. He should be more comfortable back down here and won a similar contest at 1m at Aqueduct in February.

Tips

6 year old gelding BOOTLEGGER, a French import, does have the benefit of having had a recent run. He took second place in that run which was here at Belmont in slower conditions. He has been a fairly consistent runner and in this field is worth considering for a place coming in at an early 12/1 quote* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). Bootlegger scored a fourth place on his last mile trip which was at Aqueduct.

The other main contender that we see in this contest is CATCH A CAB. The six year old is with a new yard for the first time. He was knocking on the door at the end of last year, but couldn’t quite get that win on the board. Catch A Cab competed at eight and a half trip at Belmont in October last year and was third of eight. There’s easily enough in him to pique interest.

The threat of CHIEF KNOW IT ALL can’t be dismissed either. He is aiming for a four-timer on his return. He is with a new yard for the first time here. Cheif Know It All has been tearing it up in contests, the most recent of which was at 9f in the middle of January this year. Top rated and a top threat.

Race Details

Race 6 brings more claiming action into the spotlight. This one is open to horses of 3 years or more. This is in the Fast Dirt at Belmont Park and it is a 6f contest. It’s another big field with 14 features. The winner takes just shy of $33k

Race Favourite

Current race favourite is MAD MUNNYS who is a 5/2 quote* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). His last run was at Belmont earlier this month in sloppy conditions and finished well out of the places. That would be excusable except that he’s familiar with that type of conditions, winning a similar race at Aqueduct in January in the same going. Very hit and miss. He may be worth a pass.

Tips

POOL WINNER may be worth conditioning to get back to his best. He scored a win at the end of January in an optional allowance claimer at Penn National. He followed that up with a good win, before slipping out of the fame in September at Laurel Park.

That was his last run but he has scored 6 wins and 8 places from 19 previous turf starts. This is higher company than he’s used to, but he’s not bad e/w value from 16/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020)

Six year old KITTEN’S CAT is worth a look as well. That is because of his last run where he scored a win at Turfway. In December he took a second place finish at Aqueduct. Since a score at Woodbine in September, he has produced some pretty consistent stuff and has to be respected in this one

Race Details

Race 8 switches to some Allowance terms. This is a 6f trip on the fast dirt, and it is shaping up to be a fascinating sprint which is being dominated in the betting market by Behind The Couch. This is open to 3 year olds and above with 12 declared. The winner takes $35k.

Race Favourite

BEHIND THE COUCH is the strong favourite for this contest at 2/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). This is an exciting filly who produced a very good second place on her last run which was at Belmont in October last year.

She has been lightly worked but the big moments in her short career came when she was thrown into a big $126k Stakes company last August. Behind The Couch finished outside of the places in that six-horse field. She has been in the places in all three starts at Belmont Park.

Tips

OFFICER HUTCHY was put into $315k Stakes action in December last year and put in a good performance to take second place in a field of eleven. This will be her bow at Belmont Park, but she looks a threat at 7/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). It has been two wins and two second-place finishes from her four racetrack appearances so far.

The unexposed MEDELLIN broke her maiden at the first attempt. That happened in December last year when she scored at Aqueduct. She hasn’t had another run since then, so that is all that we have to go on. But it was an impressive performance and that suggests she can handle her own sex up at this level, enough to have considerations at 20/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020)

Race Details

This is the big one of the day from Belmont Park. This is the Ogden Phipps Stakes which is a Grade 1 contest. The winner will get $189k as a prize from this. 3 year olds and above are eligible for the run which is on the fast diet. The distance is 1m 110y.

Race Favourite

Current stakes favourite is OLLIE’S CANDY at 6/5* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). She returns to Grade 1 company after competing at that level at Oaklawn Park in her last run, which was just back in April. Ollie’s Candy took second place there, being just edged out by a head. She is going to have a big chance to score here and has claimed four wins from 6f to 1m.

Tips

PINK SANDS is a 5/1 shot and does bring some winning form* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). She is looking for a hat trick on this appearance. She is a winner of six races from 6f to 1m. Her most recent success was landed at Gulfstream over 7f in January. Pink Sands has plenty to offer.

GOLDEN AWARD is another that warrants some interest for this one and she is actually the highest rated in the field. She comes in after competing in the Grade 3 Royal Delta Stakes at Gulfstream in February. Golden Award to second there missing out on a double after scoring at Aqueduct in November.

Race Details

This is the final race from the day’s card at Belmont Park on Saturday. This is a starter allowance fixture which is open to 3 year olds and above. It is another big field to sift through with 12 declared. It’s a 1m trip on the turf.

Race Favourite

The race favourite is BEAN COUNTER at 11/8* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020). It has been back to back runners up places from her and this is a classy horse who wouldn’t be winning out of turn either in what is a competitive race. She simply has to be there or thereabouts with the consistency and threat she brings.

Tips

PRINCESS FAWZIA made an impressive debut, landing a 1m success at Belmont Park in September last year. Given that run, she is worth keeping on side even though she is heavily underexposed against some of her competitors. A 12/1 price on her carries some appeal* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 20:59 GMT on Tuesday, 7th April 2020).

The other one that we will pick out of this big field is GLORIOUSLY who scored on her last win. STRIKE MAGIC AND STORMY DERBY DAY are both returning after wins as well, but GLORIOUSLY is the pick here. She was knocking on that door, trending upwards to the score she banked at Gulfstream as the 6/5 FAV last time out.
