The USA are the reigning champions and will be looking to make a big early statement of intent in their title defence. They have already seen hosts France post a big opening win and will want to follow suit. They should easily get out of this group, with only really Sweden there to challenge them. The CONCACAF Women’s Cup was won by the USA last year, beating Canada in the final. They have some great form behind them at the moment, with a six-match winning streak going. The USA took five clean sheets in that sequence, and their last four wins have all been in friendly fixtures.
At this year’s SheBelivesCup the USA were held to 2-2 draws by Japan and England before getting a win over Brazil. They are going to take some stopping and Thailand are not likely to do so at all. What a rough game for Thailand to open with. But then the positive is that the fixture will be out of the way. Thailand don’t have any form going for them at the moment either having lost each of their last five played. They lost all three of their games at the Cyprus Women’s Cup earlier this year competing against Mexico, Italy and Nigeria.
They did score against Mexico and Italy. Since then they have had two World Cup warm-up fixtures, both ending in heavy losses against France and Belgium. They were in the World Cup four years ago. Their 3-2 win over the Ivory Coast sandwiched two 4-0 defeats against Germany and Norway. Their group fixture against Chile will give them their best chance of getting a win on the board at France 2019.
