Valencia News and Form

It is advantage Valencia now with a 3-1 win in the bag after the first leg. They got that result thanks to two late counter-attacking goals. Now it’s back to the Mestalla where they will be expected to finish this job. They started this season in the Champions League where they finished third behind Juventus and Man Utd with a W2 D2 L2 record. This is the second time that these two local rivals have been paired together in Europe.

The previous one was in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup, with Valencia winning 1-0 on aggregate and then going on to win the tournament outright. Good omens? Valencia are W6 D1 L1 at home in Europe against fellow Spanish sides but have lost three of their four previous two-legged ties against fellow Spanish teams. Valencia have been in three previous quarter-final ties, winning two of those. They are on a ten-match undefeated streak of home form now, winning each of their last seven in the tournament. Valencia have progressed on each of the previous sixteen occasions that they had won the first leg away in UEFA competition.

Key-Facts – Valencia v Villarreal

  • Valencia have won six of eight previous home games in Europe against Spanish teams
  • Valencia are unbeaten in ten on home soil in UEL
  • Villarreal have lost one of their last 13 away matches in the Europa League

Villarreal News and Form

Villarreal were unbeaten on home soil until they hosted rivals Valencia in the last round. Their cause wasn’t helped out in picking up an early red card. So they have a big comeback on their hands to try and get back into this. They were always going to be underdogs for the tie. Villarreal have played nine previous games in UEFA competition against Spanish opposition and have only produced the one win in that sequence. They have won just one of four previous two-legged ties against Spanish teams as well. Winning is not enough in this one, they need to get at least three goals on the board on the night in winning.

That doesn’t sound like too likely of a scenario really. Villarreal won their group in this season’s Europa League, but only managed a draw in each of their road games. This is their third quarterfinal appearance in the competition, holding a 100% record from those previous two. That goes for matches as well, as they had won all four quarterfinal matches in the competition before this season. Villarreal have lost only one of their last 13 UEFA Europa League away matches (W5 D7) and their overall record in the competition’s knockout phase is W7 D3 L5.

Valencia v Villarreal Predictions

Valencia to win: Valencia, who are the stronger of the two sides, have one foot in the door of the semifinals. Everything went their way in the first leg and they will probably see this out fairly comfortably on home soil. Valencia to win at 8/11 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on April 13th, 2019 at 5:02 p.m.)
