Valencia News and Form – Can Valencia do the double over Chelsea?

How important will that win in London be for Valencia at the end of this qualification campaign? It is a tight three-way battle for the top two spots. A draw in this game would keep Valencia ahead of Chelsea in the tiebreaker between the two clubs and that could be a huge factor. It hasn’t been smooth sailing for them, however. They lost their first game at the Mestalla in this group, going down heavily against Ajax. In their third game, they could only manage a draw against bottom side Lille.

But they produced a solid 4-1 home win over the French side back on home soil. Last season Valencia finished third in their Champions League group behind Juventus and Manchester United. They then put a run to the semi-finals of the Europa League together. At the Mestalla, Valencia have won 13 of their last 18 European fixtures losing the other five in that sequence. It has been 9 wins from 19 previous matches against sides from the English top-flight (D5 L5). All five of those losses happened in their last eight played.

Chelsea News and Form – Can Chelsea secure the crucial win in Spain?

The Blues have their work cut out for them in this one. After that loss against Valencia on Matchday One, Chelsea have responded with a W2 D1 record in their following three games. Out on the road, they have banked one-goal margin victories at Lille and them impressively at Ajax. On Matchday Four Chelsea found themselves 4-1 down at home against Ajax and fought back brilliantly to earn a point from a 4-4 draw. But the defensive area of Chelsea’s game is a bit of a problem for them. They look as if they can be easily exposed.

Chelsea have scored at least three goals in half of their last dozen European fixtures now. Last season the Blues went unbeaten in their successful Europa League campaign last term. So their loss on Matchday One of this campaign was the first time that the Blues had lost in Europe since going down to Barcelona in March 2018 in the Champions League. That was in Chelsea’s last trip to Spain and it snapped a 10 match unbeaten run of form that they were on Spanish soil (W3 D7). Chelsea have taken one win in their last nine fixtures against Spanish teams (D4 L4).
