Wales v Slovakia Preview

The Welsh get their qualification campaign for Euro 2020 underway on home soil against Slovakia. A good win here gets the Dragons up and running. This is in Group E of qualification which also contains Croatia, Azerbaijan and Hungary. A stoppage-time goal against Trinidad and Tobago gave Wales a 1-0 friendly win in midweek, a game in which they rested Gareth Bale and a whole bunch of their regular starting eleven.

Wales are W2 L4 in their last six games played and on home soil, have lost two of their last three. In the Nations League on home soil, Wales beat Ireland 4-1 and lost 2-1 against Denmark. In just two of their last ten games have Wales managed to score more than one goal in a game. They have scored in four of their last five though. Their main man Bale is the 7/5 anytime goalscorer favourite for the game* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 22nd, 2019 at 8:34 p.m.).

Key-Facts – Wales v Slovakia

  • Wales are W2 L1 in their head to head with Slovakia
  • Each of the three previous meetings went over 2.5 goals
  • Slovakia beat Hungary in their Euro 2020 qualifying opener

Slovakia are already up and running in their Euro 2020 qualification campaign. They recorded a solid 2-0 home win over Hungary in midweek. That was a very solid opening for The Falcons. Back in the Nations League, they finished bottom of their group against Ukraine and Czech Republic. In World Cup 2018 qualification they finished second behind England in their group.

Their form has been a bit patchy since the start of September though with a W3 D1 L3 record overall. Each of the wins in the sequence were on home soil. They have lost each of their last four competitive away matches. Like Wales, Slovakia have scored in our of their last five international fixtures. After their three points against Hungary, you imagine that they would be delighted at getting a point out of this away from home.

Wales v Slovakia Predictions

Wales to win: Wales should be chomping at the bit to get going in this one on home soil. There’s a bit of pressure on to deliver but they should be able to raise their game to get three points in the bag at 11/10 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 22nd, 2019 at 8:34 p.m.)
