It was a really good start that Watford had to last season’s campaign. They put together a four-match winning streak at the start of the campaign. Three of those four wins were at home and one of them was against Tottenham. Overall though they only ended up with a W8 D3 L8 home record at Vicarage Road for the season. They went off the boil badly at the end of the season. They only picked up one point from their final four home games.

To close out the season Watford lost six of their final nine league games, home and away combined. One big positive for them was that they were very comfortable on home soil against the weaker divisional team. The Hornets suffered one defeat in their home fixtures against bottom-half of the table opposition (W5 D3 L1) including a 2-0 success over Brighton.

Watford produced an average of 1.4 goals per home game, but 68% of all league fixtures at Vicarage Road went over 2.5 goals. There was no clean sheet earned by Watford in any of their last six games on home soil for the campaign. They didn’t get one in any of their final twelve league games, home and away. The Hornets were losing at halftime in 8 of their 19 home games.

It was only a two-point margin that Brighton survived with at the end of the last season. They were fourth from the bottom. They were just having a tough season throughout, but if you look back their survival was helped greatly by the poor form of those who finished in the bottom three. Brighton didn’t do themselves any favours.

The Seagulls failed to win any of their last nine games of the season, losing six of those. Their away form last season was W3 D4 L12 and they averaged less than a goal per game on the road. Their defence conceded at an average of 1.7 goals per road fixture. They claimed a clean sheet in only 11% of their away games. All three of the away wins which they did put on the board were by a one-goal margin only.

Half of their twelve away defeats were by a margin of at least two goals. Brighton conceded the first goal in 13 of their 19 road fixtures the last term. Graham Potter has a lot of work on his hands here after replacing Chris Hughton. He has tried to reshape the look of the team a little bit by bringing in defender Matt Clarke and record singing Adam Webster, while midfielder Leandro Trossard comes in from Genk.
