White Christmas Odds Update – Novelty Betting

Odds on a UK White Christmas slashed after wintry spell

Novelty Betting & Other Events Betting

Coral are by no means the only online bookmaker running a special Christmas promotion. However, their launch of #CoralChristmas on Twitter on the theme of the 12 days of Christmas has unfortunately coincided with a ‘website is currently undergoing maintenance’ message on their home page.

I’d suggest that maintenance is not what’s being undertaken but I suppose ‘breakdown’ would be admitting that your IT department has fallen down badly on a day when everything needs to be tip-top. That’s a pity as I was intrigued by Coral’s claim that they are offering 1/2 for snow to fall on Christmas Day at any of the 13 major UK airports on which they are focussing.

A Coral spokesman says that punters are piling on a White Christmas after the recent cold spell which could turn this December into one of the coldest on record in the United Kingdom. In my part of the world, we are usually sheltered from the worst of the winter weather but we have had one moderate fall of the white stuff already, though it didn’t hang around for long.

Statistically, we can expect to see snow to fall somewhere in the UK on Christmas Day at least every other year but an actual White Christmas in which considerable amount fall and lie on the ground is far more rare. It has only happened four times in the last 50 years, the last time seven years ago according to the Met Office.

Naturally, there is more chance of snow falling the further north you are. We’ll stick to the market which concentrates on city airports and Betway have the most comprehensive market at present. The Malta-based bookmaker’s headquarters are unlikely to be hit by freezing weather but reckon Aberdeen are only 5/4 to have a White Christmas. A little further south, Edinburgh is 6/4 and Glasgow is 13/8. Newcastle is the most likely English airport to see snow on Christmas Day (5/2) while Manchester is 5/1. London is 4/1 but Betway don’t distinguish between Gatwick, Heathrow or the actual City airport (or indeed Stansted or Luton which were both closed last week in blizzards).

If I were you, I’d wait until at least December 20 before parting with any seasonal cash as there is far more accuracy in five-day forecasts!
