Women’s World Cup 2019 Preview – June 7th to July 7th, 2019

England’s Lionesses will arrive in France as one of the front runners to win the tournament outright. Four years ago they came close, finishing third in the tournament and that was the tournament which really put them on the map. They are now one of the leading forces in the women’s game.

Can the Lionesses come home with the title in their hands? England are 6/1 to win the 2019 Women’s World Cup* (betting odds taken from Betfair on June 11th, 2019 at 00:32 am). Read our Women’s World Cup 2019 preview for more:

Tournament Details

The 2019 Women’s World Cup will start on June 7th and the final will be played a month later on July 27th. There will be 24 nations taking part in the competition and the event will be hosted across 9 different cities in France.

Defending their title at the tournament will be the USA, who four years ago collected their third World Cup title by beating Japan in the final. VAR will be in use at the tournament for the first time.

From the group stage, which has six groups of four, the top two from each will progress to the knockout stage along with the four best third-placed teams.

Group A – Will France lead the way?

France 1/5, Norway 4/1, South Korea 33/1, Nigeria 66/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am)

Host nation France are one of the tournament favourites which is not unreasonable at all. They boast some of the top players in the game like Eugenie Le Sommer and Wendie Renard. The French should cruise in this group and look strong for their 11/4 tournament outright odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am). One of the big assets that France have is that the main core of their team come from Lyon.

Lyon are the best side in Europe as seen once again recently in claiming their fourth straight Champions League title. With France being on home soil as well, it’s reasonable to assume they are going to get close to reaching their first ever major final. Norway are the ones most likely to follow France although they won’t have their star player and 2018 Ballon D’Or winner Ada Hegeberg playing.

Group B – Can improving Spain challenge?

Germany 2/5, Spain 9/4, China 16/1, South Africa 100/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am)

Germany were runners-up four years ago and they aren’t likely to go out the same way as their men’s team did at the World Cup 2018. Germany should easily qualify from the group stage. Germany are another of the frontrunners for the tournament and a lot of their success will rest on the shoulders of the brilliance of Alexandra Popp to get the goals.

They have produced some good wins this year, but they perhaps don’t look as well rounded as either the USA or the French. The rest of the opposition in this group is relatively weak though by Germany’s standards. Spain tanked in the group stage four years ago. They were in a mess then but are more settled four years on. They will probably join Germany in the knockout stages but are unlikely to stop the Germans from winning the group.

Group C – Will Brazil qualify?

Brazil 4/5, Italy 7/4, Australia 15/4, Jamaica 500/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am)

This should be one of the more competitive groups in the race for top spot. Australia, aka the Matildas, are the favourites to beat Brazil to the punch. They have come on leaps and bounds and look a decent shot to make a serious run to at least the quarter finals. They have lost out in the quarterfinals in each of their last three World Cup campaigns. Australia have a goal scoring superstar in Sam Kerr and this could finally be her big moment on the world stage.

Kerr’s goals could help Australia push on further this year. Her first ever World Cup awaits her. Marta is one of the most recognizable names in the women’s game. The Brazilian legend is back for another World Cup challenge, but the Selecao Feminina are badly out of form. It’s a nine-match losing streak that they are on. Italy, who have missed out on the last five World Cups are a rising nation. They may be worth a little flutter to beat Brazil to the second automatic qualification spot in this group.

Group D – Can England’s Lionesses take group win?

England 1/4, Japan 10/3, Scotland 40/1, Argentina 75/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am)

While England should easily find themselves in the knockout stages, they get a difficult draw here with Japan in the mix and a bit of a derby match against Scotland. Japan were the ones who knocked them out at the semi-final stage four years ago. The two nations met in this year’s SheBelieves Cup Final, England winning but Japan keeping their cards close to their chest by not fielding their strongest side at the event.

Under Phil Neville, England don’t actually look as exciting of a side as they were four years ago or even two summer’s ago at the Euro’s. They have great experience and quality like Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton and Fran Kirby to help at least make the quarters. Japan are a very good, organised side in defence and have a great crop of young players coming through. They are good 10/3 odds to win Group D* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am). Scotland are coming on really well. Unfortunately, this is a really tough draw for them, which may limit their chances of getting automatic qualification, but they will stand up and challenge.

Group E – Will Canada beat Euro Champions Netherlands?

Netherlands 10/11, Canada 5/4, New Zealand 10/1, Cameroon 100/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am)

There is a big case to be made for the Netherlands in Group E and that is because they are the reigning European champions. That really raised their profile to a whole new level in terms of support and it was an unexpected title that they picked up. They did have their struggles in World Cup 2019 qualification through and indeed had to get through the playoff route against Denmark and Switzerland to reach the finals.

That means that there could be some good value at 5/4 odds on Canada taking the group win here* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am). They haven’t lost a single game in 2019 and their defence is just about as watertight as it could get. Four years ago they were in a group with the Netherlands and New Zealand and won it, so there’s no reason why the Canucks couldn’t progress as winners again.

Group F – Will USA dominate their group?

USA 2/9, Sweden 10/3, Chile 33/1, Thailand 150/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am)

USA are the reigning world champions and there should be no stopping them in this group. They are the ultimate powerhouse in the world game and their squad is littered with experience. The USA are taking on the challenge as the 7/2 outright favourites* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am).

Granted the big European nations are starting to close the gap on them, but when it comes to tournament mode and you look at their results and the players they have available like Alex Morgan and them winning this group is an absolute banker.

So should the USA reaching the semi-finals be. Morgan incidentally is the 5/1 favourite to be Player Of The Tournament* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am).  With little threat coming from Chile and Thailand, 2016 Olympic silver medalists Sweden should book second place in the table.

Top Goalscorer Odds

There is some serious goal scoring talent on show at the Women’s World Cup and you are naturally going to want to start by picking a player from a team who going to make the semifinals at least. That will naturally bring the USA powerhouses of Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd into the picture. Morgan is such a special talent, so prolific and she’s hard to ignore as the 6/1 outright favourite* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am).

French duo Amandine Henry and Eugenie Le Sommer, even though the former operates a little deeper, both have great chance of getting close to picking up the Golden Boot as well. Le Sommer at 7/1 to have a crack* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am) is a solid wager.

Germany’s legend Alexandra Popp is quality and professionalism personified and is a 12/1 shot. Australia’s Sam Kerr is the really interesting one here. She has failed to net in two previous World Cups but has developed into a world-class scoring talent. Australia are in good shape to make a deep run and 25-year-old Kerr is an integral part of that. Kerr is 10/1 in the Top Goalscorer market* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am).

Women’s World Cup 2019 Predictions

The straightforward pick is going to be team USA at 7/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am). They have a much deeper, more talented squad than any other team heading to France. They are most certainly not going to let their grip on their champion status slide easily. It is worth noting that some of Europe’s big guns like Germany and England don’t look quite up to the mark of being able to challenge.

When it comes down to it, someone has to come up with something to beat the USA to get the title. The only ones who look to be good enough to match up to them are hosts France at 7/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am). Their huge Lyon influence may be able to shake up them and shake them free of some recent under-achievements at tournaments.

As the outsider option, it has to be Australia. They have settled back down into being a really strong unit and they can’t be ignored at all. The Matilda’s look in good shape and they have a degree of World Cup consistency, and if they can provide chances for Kerr, she will bury them. Australia are 14/1 each way* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 00:32 am).
