Bluebirds to steal the points at the DW

Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City Betting Tips – EFL Championship, 3rd August 15.00pm

Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic welcome Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City to the DW Stadium on the opening weekend of the EFL Championship season. The Latics were very strong at home last term, but the Bluebirds are the favourites in this one. These two sides have very different ambitions, as Athletic look to survive the drop while Cardiff push for promotion, but this could be a pretty even contest. Who will prevail at the DW on Saturday afternoon?

Wigan Athletic News and Form – Can Cook’s side cause Cardiff problems on Saturday?

Wigan had a decent first year back in the Championship last season following promotion from EFL League One. The Latics sailed a little too close to the wind at times, but they ended up finishing 12 points clear of the drop zone.

Cook’s side had a fine end to last season’s campaign, winning three and drawing one of their last four, seeing off the likes of Leeds United, Preston North End and Millwall. In fact, Athletic lost just one of their last nine (four wins, four wins).

Wigan were strong at the DW last season, claiming 11 Championship victories on home soil. Meanwhile, just Leeds, Derby County, Birmingham City and Sheffield United won on their patch. Only eight clubs picked up more home points, too.

However, Wigan’s abysmal form away from home nearly cost them dearly. Cook’s troops secured only two away victories, losing 16 times in the process. That was the joint worst away record in the league with Rotherham United and Ipswich Town, who were both relegated to the third tier.

Wigan had a pretty mediocre pre-season campaign, winning one, losing one and drawing three. However, they did seal back-to-back draws with Premier League Everton (0-0) and Burnley (2-2).

Cardiff City News and Form – Can the Bluebirds start with a win?

Cardiff City, along with Fulham and Huddersfield Town, were relegated from the Premier League last season. However, the Bluebirds had a real go in the top flight, missing out on survival by just two points. The Welsh club won ten, drew four and lost 24 of their 38 league encounters.

Warnock’s side had the second worst home record in the Premier League, claiming just 20 points. On the road, meanwhile, City picked up impressive wins at Leicester City, Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United. That win at Old Trafford came on the final day of the season, with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scoring a brace.

Warnock has been busy in the summer, with Aden Flint, Joe Day, Curtis Nelson, Will Vaulks and Gavin Whyte joining the club. On Wednesday, Cardiff brought in striker Robert Glatzel from Heidenheim for a £5.5m fee. Glatzel scored a hat-trick in German cup a game against Bayern Munich last term.

Cardiff were undefeated during pre-season, winning three and drawing one. The Bluebirds beat San Antonio (1-0) Real Valladolid (on penalties) and Nice (1-0).

The team from the Welsh capital are one of the promotion favourites, and they will be targeting all three points from Saturday’s trip to the DW. Can Cardiff start with a win?

Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City Predictions

Cardiff City win: It’s rarely a goal fest when these two sides lock horns, and we could be in for another close encounter between the pair on Saturday. On paper, though, Cardiff should come out on top in this one, so I’m siding with the away win at 6/4. The Bluebirds will want to be quick out of the blocks at the DW, so back the visitors to open the scoring at 4/5.
