‘I came to play, to improve my game, I didn’t really have any expectation.’

Those were the words of Petra Kvitova after she came from a set down to win the final of the Aegeon Classic in Birmingham last week, a victory which has seen the Czech installed as one of the favourite for the Women’s Singles title at Wimbledon, which starts next week.

Kvitova was injured in a knife attack at her home in December during an attempted burglary. She was competing in only her third tournament of 2017 in Birmingham but, such is the wide-open nature of the women’s game at present, the 27-year-old is now only a best 11/2 with Betbright for Wimbledon.

Betbright are comparative newcomers to the betting industry but their website has everything that you would expect from a high-quality online bookmaker.

Left-hander Kvitova won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014 and was also a semi-finalist in 2010. She’s not got past the third round in her last two visits but that time off may have recharged the batteries and this year’s Grand Slam looks up for grabs with Serena Williams in confinement.
Williams will be 36 by the time she returns to tennis and different players react in different ways to parenthood so we could be looking at a new world order this year with a host of players laying claim to the crown.
Williams won the Australian Open before announcing her pregnancy but there was a shock in the French Open with Je?ena Ostapenko winning her first Grand Slam title in Paris. That was also her maiden WTA title and the Latvian is 16/1 to follow up at Wimbledon.

Current world number one Angelique Kerber has to go on the short-list to become Wimbledon champion. The German has already won the Australian and US Open titles and was beaten finalist last year in SW19. However, she endured a miserable clay-court season and lost in the first round of the French Open – the first world number one ever to do so. That said, the 27/1 with Unibet looks way too big.

Apart from a semi-final appearance in 2014, Simona Halep (a general 20/1) has generally struggled at the All-England Club while Kvitova’s compatriot Karoline Pliskova, vying for favouritism at a general 11/2, has never got beyond the second round. Garbine Muguruza was losing finalist in 2015 but that was only time that she’s reached the last 32 and she can be backed at 12/1 this year. Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki’s long wait for a Slam continues and she’s never even reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 10 attempts so it’s hard to recommend any bet on the Dane, even at the available 35/1.

Johanna Konta is bidding to become the first Briton since Virginia Wade to win Wimbledon and is fourth favourite at a best 14/1. Unfortunately, the Australian-born 26-year-old hadn’t even made it past the first round before stumbling out in round two in 2016. Apart from a semi-final appearance in the Australian Open last year, her record in Slams is terrible and she should have won in Nottingham earlier this month – but didn’t. An early exit in Birmingham was hardly ideal and Konta looks terrible value, even though she’ll have home support.
