Winston Salem Open Tennis Preview

The build up to the 2018 US Open continues this week on the ATP with the Winston Salem Open. Granted this is a bit of a comedown after the thrilling back to back action of the ATP Masters 1000 events at the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati. So because of that, you will see the big names in the game sitting out and taking a break ahead of Flushing Meadows.

It leaves David Goffin as the 7/1 favourite in Winston Salem Open tennis betting* (Betting Odds were taken on August 19th, 2018 at 8:17 p.m.).

This is the last tournament on the US Open Series and naturally, the big names are not going to be taking part in his one. In the field we have Pablo Carreno-Busta who is the 2016 champion of Winston Salem and is trading fairly strongly at 12/1 odds* (Betting Odds were taken on August 19th, 2018 at 8:17 p.m.) to get his hands on the title again. However, we have to look past the Spaniard as he hasn’t been running too well on the hard court for this swing of the season. He is the only former champion in this year’s field.

David Goffin heads up the market and his stock has been raised after making a run to the semi finals of the Cincinnati masters, getting the better of Juan Martin del Potro on the quarter finals. That really came out of nowhere as he lost in the first round of the Rogers Cup in the previous week. He hasn’t looked the biggest threat on this US Open Series swing but will be more comfortable down in his kind of quality of the field. He really should be a lock for the quarters.

Kyle Edmund has had a change of plans as he decided that he needed to get more court-time in and so he has decided to participate in Winston Salem. His form has slipped away having won just one match since his Wimbledon third round exit. Still, we all know what he has in him and at 14/1 odds* (Betting Odds were taken on August 19th, 2018 at 8:17 p.m.) isn’t a bad each-way punt at all this week. He should be fresh if nothing else and his participation shows his commitment.

Hyeon Chung is another who has not particularly hit the ground running in the US Open Series on the hard courts and doesn’t appeal at the price too much. The interesting name in the field is Damir Dzumhur, who made his first ever ATP World Tour Final here a year ago. He has three titles since then and he is someone pushing for more.

Prediction

We are going to take a chance on Kyle Edmund stringing together a good run. On the hard court, he has the kind of field ahead of him which he should be able to really manage if he can bring his service game. It’s not worth more than an easy way punt on him though as he isn’t in great form and this field is wide open.
