Lady Wulfruna was a Saxon noblewoman who lived over a thousand years ago in the Kingdom of Mercia.
She is largely attributed with founding the city of Wolverhampton having overcome kidnap by the Vikings. The city’s name is a derivation of Wulfruna’s Heantun as mentioned in the Saxon Chronicles and royal charters.

The Lady Wilfruna Stakes hasn’t been in existence quite that long but was first run almost 20 years ago, plenty of time form trends to develop.

Will punters be praising Urban Icon?

Urban Icon was second twice in Listed races on Turf last year.
He is a best 11/4 with Betvictor but this is a tough start to his all-weather career after a break and he has limited experience over 7f.
Ryan Moore rides, however, and the Hannon colt did finish eighth in last year’s 2000 Guineas and fourth in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot so he has a touch of class.

Gulliver hoping to stand tall

Having won at Southwell in January, Gulliver was sent to Doha for a Group 3 sprint on Turf.
He finished a respectable fourth but though he has won over 7f, most of his best form is over shorter and he may be find wanting by others who are best at the trip and over a bit further.
A decent draw should help David O’Meara’s charge but he is not much value at 13/2 with Paddy Power.

Cardsharp could deal telling blow

Third in the Lady Wilfruna last year when making his seasonal reappearance, CARDSHARP has fared better with the draw this year.
Mark Johnston’s five-year-old clearly goes well fresh and does appear best in the first half of the year so this has race has probably been a target for a while.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that he won a Group 2 as a juvenile and a Listed race as a three-year-old so is a cut above most of this Saturday’s rivals, who are essentially smart handicappers. He’s less exposed than some on all-weather surfaces and the general 7/1 may not last long.

Headgear would need to improve Habub

A general 8/1, Habub is having a first try on the Tapeta surface having won four times on Polytrack (three times at Chelmsford). He is among the highest rated and a return to 7f should be in his favour but he needs more.

Best Of The Rest

Musselburgh handicap winner Blown By Wind and Marie’s Diamond, who landed the Listed Pomfret Stakes at Pontefract last July, supplement the Mark Johnston team at Wolverhampton.
Documenting was a close fifth in this race after enduring a luckless run 12 months ago and is 10/1 with Bet365 with the line-up completed by Glen Shiel, Straight Right and Ghaith.
