World Cup 2022 UEFA Qualification Process

All teams in each of the groups play each other twice and only the team that finishes top automatically goes to the World Cup.

The 10-best group runners up and the best two Nations League Group Winners will go to three separate play-off paths (one leg semi-finals, one leg final), producing four more qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. That’s one from each of the paths.

The qualification matches for the 2022 World Cup will all be played between March and November 2021, with the play-offs happening in March of the World Cup year.

England face an easy qualification group

England will be expected to breeze through their qualification group for World Cup 2020. They have been drawn against Poland, Hungary, Albania, Andorra and San Marino.

The sternest challengers in that section to the Three Lions will be Poland, who haven’t beaten England since 1973.

But it is England who are the 1/5 odds-on favourites to win Qualification Group I with Poland as the 9/2 second-favourites* (betting odds recorded from Bet365 at 00:43 GMT on Wednesday, 9th December 2020).

No other team in the section are in single figures;

Scotland in a competitive group

Scotland have landed in Group F which looks quite competitive from their point of view. Scottish football is abuzz with expectation after they qualified for their first major tournament for more than 20 years.

Will they be able to follow up a place at the next European Championship by reaching the World Cup 2022?

Scotland are the 6/1 third-favourites to win Group F behind both the odds-on quotes for Denmark and Austria* (betting odds recorded from Bet365 at 00:43 GMT on Wednesday, 9th December 2020).

So Scotland are going to have their work cut out for them. Scotland will also be playing Israel, Faroe Islands and Moldova in the group.

Group F World Cup 2022 Qualification Odds: Denmark 5/6, Austria 13/8, Scotland 6/1, Israel 25/1, Faroe Islands 250/1, Moldova 250/1

Wales face a stiff road to World Cup 2022

The last time that Wales put in an appearance at the World Cup was 1958. They have been drawn in Group E for qualification for the 2022 edition, where they will face a tough challenge of trying to beat Belgium to top spot.

The Red Devils are the top-ranked team in the world at the moment and are going to be enormously difficult to knock over.

Belgium are 2/9 odds-on to win Group E of World Cup 2022 Qualification, just to highlight that* (betting odds recorded from Bet365 at 00:43 GMT on Wednesday, 9th December 2020).

Wales will also face the Czech Republic, Belarus and Estonia in the group. It could end up being those duels with the Czech Republic that’s the key for Welsh hopes here in a battle for second place

Group E World Cup 2022 Qualification Odds: Belgium 2/9, Czech republic 7/1, Wales 11/2, Belarus 200/1, Estonia 250/1

Ireland face Portugal in Group A

Ireland have received a tough draw in having to take on Portugal and Serbia in Group A of the World Cup 2022 qualification. That leaves Ireland as the 10/1 underdogs to win the group and at 2/1 to finish in second place.

Group A Winner World Cup 2020 Qualification Odds: Portugal 4/11, Serbia 7/2, Ireland 8/1, Azerbaijan 66/1, Luxembourg 100/1

Northern Ireland land Italy in Group C

There is not an easy route to Qatar for Northern Ireland having landed themselves in Group C alongside Italy and Switzerland.

Northern Ireland are massive 50/1 underdog to win Group C and are at 7/1 to take second place* (betting odds recorded from Bet365 at 00:43 GMT on Wednesday, 9th December 2020).

Given that Switzerland have a good record of qualification for the finals, coupled with the strengths that It brings to the table, a big effort is needed by the Irish, who only just missed out on reaching the next European Championship.

Group C World Cup 2022 Qualification Odds: Italy 4/7, Switzerland 9/4, Northern Ireland 12/1, Bulgaria 14/1, Lithuania 150/1

Reigning Champions France odds-on to top Group D

France, who are the shortest price of the European contenders to win the World Cup 2022 outright, have what appears to be a relatively easy qualification draw. They will be facing Ukraine, Finland, Bonsai and Kazhakstan.

Germany gets Romania, Iceland, North Macedonia, Germain and Liechtenstein, while Spain faces a slightly more competitive batch of teams in Sweden, Greece, Georgia and Kosovo.
