Will new World Number 1 Barty win in Eastbourne?

Australia’s Ashleigh Barty beat Julia Goerges in the final of Birmingham the weekend. To top off the title, she moved up to the World Number One spot in the rankings. Barty is on form after collecting the French Open title as well. So she is the one to beat at the moment. There isn’t the easiest of draws ahead of her though.

She could meet Jo Konta in the round of sixteen and potentially fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarters. But Barty is on her game at the moment. This is just her second appearance at the tournament, after being a losing quarter-finalist to Caroline Wozniacki last year. Barty is 5/1 to land the title* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.).

Can Konta taste home success?

After her wonderful clay court swing of the season, Britain’s Jo Konta will be looking to stay on top of her game on the grass. She was out at Birmingham last week. She fell in the second round against Annet Kontaveit. That was on the back of her gruelling run to the final of Roland Garros. So Konta will be looking to Eastbourne to get herself up and running once again.

Konta doesn’t have a bad track record at the event. Following her quarterfinal in 2015, she reached back to back semis in 2016 and 2017 before falling in the round of sixteen to Wozniacki last season. Konta can be backed at 10/1 to lift the title this week* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.).

Will former Champion Pliskova rise to another Eastbourne success?

Karolina Pliskova is a former winner at this event and like Konta, will be looking to step her game up on grass. Pliskova lost against her sister Krystina at Birmingham last week, early in the tournament so she has had time to rest and get herself together. As the third seed, she is down in the bottom half of the draw and that has given her a much favourable draw. At that 10/1 price, the same as Konta, the draw alone makes Pliskova look a touch more value for a successful week* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.).

Can Halep get it together on grass?

Simona Halep is out at the tournament and is in that clutch of players at the 10/1 odds mark* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.). Her best tennis has never really been played on grass to be fair, but she is a big name player and always has to be looked at. This will be her first outing on grass this season. It’s her first action since her quarterfinal upset against Amanda Anisimova at the French Open. Halep is in the second quarter along with Angelique Kerber. So she is in the difficult top half of the draw.

Can Kerber keep it keen in Eastbourne?

Germany’s Angelique Kerber is a great grass court player and just had a good week in Mallorca where she reached the semifinals. Kerber is a former Wimbledon champion so her grass court credentials are right up there. She is someone who is looking to just find her form again after not having been in contention for anything really since Monterrey back in early April. This is her first ever Eastbourne outing.

Each Way Options

There are some decent each way options floating around in the field this week. There is Caroline Wozniak who is actually the defending champion, who is a 25/1 outsider* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.). There’s not too bad of a draw ahead of her either.

Dutch player Kiki Bertens has to be worth a look as well. She recently ran to the finals of the Libema Open to collect a grass court title. Bertens is at 12/1 odds to win this week* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.) and could be the one to watch. She is in the third quarter of the draw where she could meet Wozniacki in the final eight. So taking one of these could be worth considering.

WTA Eastbourne Predictions

This is a wonderful competitive field. The top half of the draw is absolutely loaded and for us, that will mean that it’s unlikely that Johanna Konta will go all of the way. We are dropping down to the bottom of the draw for our pick and that is Karolina Pliskova. She will be wanting to step things up here and has a favourable draw which makes her value at 10/1 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on June 23rd, 2019 at 11:23 p.m.). The outside pick will be Kiki Bertens who is in grass court form.
