Big post-Olympic tennis tournament as some of the top players on the Women’s circuit leave London to head to Montreal for the lastest edition of the Rogers Cup. This is part of the US Open series, and only Wimbledon and the US Open have a deeper, richer history than this tournament. With Williams out of the picture, that leaves Belarus star Victoria Azarenka as the betting favourite. Williams crushed Azarenka, the current world number one in the semi finals of the Olympics, but Vika did bounce back to grab the bronze medal with a win over Maria Kirilenko. She also struck gold in the mixed doubles with partner Max Mirnyi so her confidence shouldn’t be too dented. Azarenka has four titles to her name this year, including the Australian Open, but after blitzing all before her at the start of the season, she has found the going harder as the season has worn on. The last time she tasted victory was back in March at Indian Wells. Nothing wrong with her game really and has a decent enough track record to have a good go at things in Montreal, as she has been a three time semi finalists of the Rogers Cup. If she gets her powerful all round game going then she should be in the final four at least. Azarenka is trading as 3/1 favourite with online bookmaker Stan James.
Other Contenders
Maria Sharapova will want to shake off the nightmare that beset her in the final of the Olympics, She managed to take just one game off gold medallist Serena Williams in terribly one sided match. That was a big shock because Sharapova is usually full of power herself, but neither she nor Azarenka was able to event make a dent in Williams’ defences at the Olympics, with the American just about being unplayable Still, Sharapova gained the silver medal in her Olympic début and there is some good incentive for her this week. Sharapova is close to Azarenka in the world rankings, and the 2012 French Open Champion could gain the number one spot this week. The Russian’s best finish at the Rogers Cup was a runner up back in 2009, and while this is a decent field, her power behind her first serve as well as her defence should get her deep into things this week.
Poland’s Agnieska Radwanska is trading well and that is because she should be really well rested. She was shocked in the first round of the Olympics as she went down in the first round against Germany’s Julia Goerges. Was expecting a lot more from the Pole who has been one of the best and most consistent players on the WTA this season. She sounds confident enough and will be happy to get back on hard courts. She has three titles on the WTA Tour this season, two of them having come on the hard court. Definitely a big threat and will want to prove herself after her the Olympic disappointment, especially after having made it to the final of Wimbledon prior to that.
Germany’s Angelique Kerber is still just about the hottest ticket on the WTA at the moment, and she had a good run tot he quarter finals of the Olympics where she ran into Azarenka in a tough match. But the German star has wrapped up two Tour titles this year and is ranked 7th in the world. She has had a tremendous season really and holds a 48-14 match record for the season heading to Montreal She has a pretty comfortable draw as well which she should capitalise on. Dominika Cibulkova finally made the breakthrough for the season that her potential has warranted. She went all the way in Carlsbad taking the title, but suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the Olympics. She’s better than that and could bounce back. Petra Kvitova slowly looks to be getting back to her best and she is in the field as well.
Best Outside Bet
Sara Errani, going as eight seed has had a tremendous season. She recently arrived in the top ten after picking up four titles on the clay court swing of the season. That is her best surface, but she has an OK 11-7 season record on the hard court. The diminutive, plucky Italian doesn’t have a big serve and that’s why she likes slower courts. Shouldn’t be too much to trouble her on the way to the quarter finals though and she is a real fighter. Outside shot at 28/1 with online bookmaker Stan James.
