The preparations are running along well now ahead of the French Open at Roland Garros at the end of the month. This prestigious tournament in Madrid has been one of the top warm up tournaments for Roland Garros and it is one of four Premier Mandatory event of the year. We are the wonderfully named Magic Box for the week and it is again going to make waves as an innovative tournament, because for the first time ever, it will host a WTA event on blue clay. The organisers switched from the usual red stuff in order to make viewing better for television and fans. This is because the yellow tennis ball is easer to see against the blue backdrop. The move has courted criticism though, because the process of making blue clay (it’s not a simple matter of dying the red stuff) is completely different to the regular grains which get used. This means that it is going to be a totally new surface for the players. However, it shouldn’t upset the general run of things, as good clay court players should still be able to take advantage here, and the cream usually rises to the top. Petra Kvitova was unstoppable here last year as she put in one of her top career performances to out-gun Victoria Azarenka in the final. It has been a very quiet year from Kvitova, largely because of injury. But we saw a return to some of her best play in Stuttgart recently, where she made it to the semi finals. She lost there to eventual winner Maria Sharapova, but it was a marked improvement for Kvitova, taking out Francesca Schiavone and the hot Angelique Kerber. There’s no question about whether or not she has the game to win, she does, she may just need a couple of more tournament to get really match sharp. Still, she did better on clay in Stuttgart than many had predicted and goes as joint second favourite at 11/2, with Bet Victor.

It has been an astonishing season from Vika, winning all four tournaments which she entered right from the start of the season. She is now two without a win, having reached only the quarter finals in Miami, but responded with a final appearance in Stuttgart where she lost out to Maria Sharapova. She looked comfortable enough on the transition to clay and should be a strong force again this week. It is a tough field, but she should win her quarter, even though the likes of Venus Williams and Na Li are in there. Vika is good enough to taken them down , which would leave her with a potential semi final appearance against Agnieszka Radwanska, who Vika has dominated this season.
Other Contenders
If something happens to Azarenka, then there is a great opportunity for Agnieszka Radwanska to pick up her second title of the season. The Pole has been wonderful during 2012, having really stepped up the level of her game and her consistency. Radwanska, now up to number four in the world rankings, goes as fourth seed and has one of the easiest quarters of the draw. She rose to the top of her game beating Venus Williams, Marion Bartoli and Maria Sharapova on the way to lifting the Miami title. Lost out again to Victoria Azarenka in the semi finals of Stuttgart, but a very solid player. If Azarenka doesn’t live up to her potential, then Radwanska should be in prime position to drive home from the first half of the draw.
Of course, we can’t look past Maria Sharapova, who finally broke her 2012 WTA Tour final jinx. After losing three finals this season, the Russian finally tasted success when she downed Victoria Azarenka in the final of Stuttgart on clay. The fact that she has been in four finals out of five tournaments entered this season speaks volumes for her games. She just has the power and tenacity, and some fantastically powerful defence to roll over opponents. Superb fitness levels and she is moving well. She is right up there at the peak of her game at the moment but has the toughest quarter in front of her, where Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic and Kaia Kanepi are prowling around. Tough draw, but there is no-one tougher on the WTA than Sharapova.
Serena Williams will be looking for her second title of the year, and her second title on clay at that, after winning in Charleston. Williams is a still a big powerful threat, but she is beatable. She is not the totally dominant force that she once was and there could be a fascinating match up against Maria Sharapova to come at the quarter final stage, which would be a treat. Would back Sharapova in that battle though. Williams won a couple of Fed Cup matches on clay back in April and so her clay court preparations have not been that bad at all. Her sheer power makes her a danger.
Australian Sam Stosur may be worth a look as well, because she is very good on clay. That is where most of her highlights have been. Stosur pushed Maria Sharapova hard in the quarter finals of Stuttgart recently, and does not have a bad draw at hand. The real big danger to Stosur, who granted does fall short of her maximum potential against underdogs sometimes, is Petra Kvitova, which would be a quarter final show down. But Stosur is a battler who can grind out results which her hard hitting flat tennis. She is a very solid performer on clay and that is generally when we see the best of her because of her movement. A fantastic array of names to look, and we haven’t even mentioned the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Na Li and Francesca Schiavone. Talented field.
Best Outside Bet
There have been some big performers this year from the likes of Dominika Cibulkova and Sorana Cirstea (who already dumped seventh seed Marion Bartoli out) and Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who has been in simply brilliant form. These all make for great outside bets really, but perhaps the top one should be diminutive Italian Sara Errani. Errani has been blitzing the clay court season, and she now has the longest winning streak on clay since 2009 after triumphs in Acapulco and Barcelona. Unlikely to break the big guns at 66/1, but could spring a surprise or two.
