Other types of sports bets

We have covered some of the most popular types of sports bets in this section and it would be impossible and overwhelmingly time-consuming to try and cover each and every type of bet that exists out there. The purpose of this betting school is to give you a good working knowledge of betting basics and the most common form of bet types that are out there.

Some of the most common types of sports bets are the fixed odds match bets (WDW), handicap betting including Asian handicap, over/under and in-play betting. Each of these forms of sports betting has been covered in other articles as well as an explanation of pros and cons, the real value, how odds work and how bookmakers take their edge.

But as an overview of the section and a taster of what other features that you can find out there on your betting adventure, we will expand on a few items and other types of sports bets.

Alternative football betting markets

As football is such a huge sport to follow with betting, let’s dip our toes into some other football betting markets that you may want to take a look at to advance your betting options. Any bet type mentioned here, as with any type of bet that you will come across, will always benefit from looking at stats and doing a bit of prior research before playing. An informed punter is a better-prepared punter.

Double Edged Bets

There are bets with a doubles-twist out there like Scorecast and To Win & Both Teams To Score markets. These are bets which offer huge odds because they rely on two outcomes happening in the same match. Scorecasts are where you pick a correct first goalscorer and the correct score prediction all rolled into one. To Win & Both Teams to Score is self-explanatory, you back Team A or Team B to be victorious, but both sides in the match to score. These are examples of high-risk bets which can be found across sports betting, that are better avoided most of the time.

You will be better served in placing individual bets for shorter odds on a First Goalscorer and a match outright which is the same as a scorecast. Will the odds be as good, no. Of course not, but if your selected team wins but the first goalscorer selection doesn’t net first, at least you are not out of pocket. Be wary and cautious about bets that involve two outcomes.

Score Betting – Alternatives to handicapping

There are some alternatives to handicapping and they can be found in score betting market options. This is where you can choose things like winning margins, the highest scoring team, Team A to score 2+ goals, Total Goals, Total Goals Over/Under. There are some markets which are worth investigating to see if the value there is on a par in terms of risk and reward to a match outright bet. Why? Because the match outrights is where the bookmakers ramp up their margins, so think outside the box.

Exchange Betting

Not all bookmaker sites out there are based on the common sportsbook. Operators like Betfair and Ladbrokes run exchanges which is a peer-to-peer based system which offers punters the chance to back and lay market selections (backing a team or an outcome to win or happen, or backing a team or outcome not to win or happen). Betting exchanges don’t have bookmaker margins, instead you pay commissions on winnings.

A longer term goal with exchange betting is creating the advanced ‘green books’ where you can back and lay a same market. These can be created on any sports, tennis, golf, motor racing or whatever takes your fancy. It may take a while to learn the system, but it is worth putting some advanced time into.
