Can England pull off a wonderful tale of a World Cup success at Russia 2018? England are among that group of select nations who have managed to win a World Cup tournament before, that being the famous 1966 victory over West Germany at Wembley. Fond memories of that epic triumph always get kicked up when heading into any modern World Cup edition and Russia 2018 will be no different.

England once more expects. How far can Gareth Southgate’s men go at the 2018 World Cup? Can they overcome their 16/1 odds* (betting odds taken on March 17th at 1:30 a.m.) and triumph in the World Cup for the second time? It’s nice to dream at the very least. Let’s take a look at the fixtures to start with.

It was not the worst draw that England could have gotten for themselves for sure in the draw. The Three Lions will be expected to get past the challenges of Tunisia and Panama and then the group decider would be against the Belgians in the last round of matches. This is in Group H action where England are 6/5 second favourites to top it, with Belgium at 5/6 odds-on* (betting odds taken on March 17th at 1:30 a.m.).

It really should not be too tough of a task ahead for the Three Lions at Russia 2018 in the first stage. England have faced Tunisia once before at World Cup 1988 and England won that game 2-0 thanks to goals from Alan Shearer and Paul Scholes. They also met in a friendly a couple of years later which ended in a 1-1 draw in Africa.

England will be facing Panama, who are making their World Cup debut, for the first time. The Three Lions are strong odds-on favourites to win both of those games. If they do, and Belgium also win their openers against the same opponents then the two European sides will have qualified before their clash in the third round of the group stage.

There is plenty of history between England and Belgium as the two have faced off 21 times before. England holds a fantastic W15 D1 L5 head to head record against the Belgians. Two of those matches were at previous World Cups. The first was a 1954 clash which ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw, while England took a 1-0 extra time win over Belgium at Italia 1990.

England Stage of Elimination

England are still a massive long shot to actually win the tournament outright so realistically you are expecting them to go out before the final. So the England stage of elimination market is always an interesting one looking at World cup betting and the shortest priced odds to be found are 11/4 on the Last 16 and the Quarter Final options* (betting odds taken at 7:18 p.m. on March 18th, 2018). That is around the most plausible stage for the Three Lions. If they win their group they would go to the top half of the draw to meet the runner-up of Group H (Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan) or if they finish runner-up, they go to the bottom half of the draw and face the winner of Group H. Either way there should be manageable round of sixteen tie for them.

England Top Goalscorer

There is little surprise as to who England’s hotshot at the World Cup 2018 is expected to be. That will be Harry Kane, who has a tremendous amount of responsibility on his shoulders to carry the expectations of the country. He has the class though. The other strikers likely to go, barring injury, of course, will be Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy and maybe Danny Welbeck. It’s hard to imagine any of them would be out Kane in a scoring race.

Outright Odds* for the World Cup 2018

Germany 8/2, Brazil 9/2, France 6/1, Spain 15/2, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 12/1, England 16/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 25/1, Croatia 33/1, Russia 33/1, Colombia 33/1, Poland 40/1, bar 80/1* (betting odds taken on March 16th, 2018 at 10:27 p.m.)

England are going to come up against a tough challenge at some point of the tournament obviously the first big test for them will be that game against Belgium, who are one of the strong contenders beyond the leading pack. But the expectations on the Three Lions should really be a quarter-final berth.

The real excitement through the tournament is betting on the individual matches where a wealth of markets will be open and you can dip into the thrills of live in-play action as well. There will be plenty of opportunities to earn your own success from England’s World Cup 2018 campaign.
