Explanations to our system bets calculator further below. - Short version: select system - enter odds - compute
Well, if you had swapped out your straight accumulator with a system bet, then you would have taken some coverage on your options. With a system bet, the disaster of losing your stake would not have happened if just one leg had failed. With a system bet in the above example on an accumulator with four legs in it for example, you would have won money or at least would not have lost that much in any case.
The exact result depends on the chosen system and on the odds of the selections within it. In general a system bet is more profitable with higher odds, because then the probability that some tips are incorrect is higher. If necessary you could add low odds as bankers to your system bet.

Here is an example of a system bet with three selections: Spurs, Manchester United and Liverpool.
You bet on the win options for those three in their respective matches, but by choosing a two out of three system bet (there are many systems available) then you will be covering what would be your accumulator by betting on all the examples of accumulators which could be made out of those three selections. In this case, three double bets (called Tips in System Betting) can be created:
Tip 1: Spurs & Man Utd win
Tip 2: Spurs and Liverpool win
Tip 3: Man Utd and Liverpool win
So what if just one of those teams lost in your system bet? Let's say it was Spurs. The first two Tips in the system would have lost because they involved Spurs. However, the Man Utd and Liverpool Tip will have produced a win for you. So even though two of your three Tips went down, you will still be paid out something for the win on the Man Utd and Liverpool Tip. Therefore, the two out of three system bet worked in your favour.
