Astra will be looking to bring their Europa League recent success into their Romanian top flight league form when they take on Voluntari at their Stadionul Marin Anastasovici as the home side look to improve their fortunes on the domestic front.
Astra recently saw off English Premier League side West Ham over two legs in their Europa League play-off tie as they drew 1-1 at home and then followed that up with a 1-0 win in the English capital to progress to the group stages of the competition.
On Sunday evening Astra will be looking to register just their second league win of the new season having gained a recent 3-1 home win over Poli Timisoara, and along with having won three of their last five on home turf, they’ve actually lost just twice in their last 15 home matches in Liga 1 as they look to defend their title win at the end of last season.
Visitors Voluntari have produced mixed results in the Romanian top flight having won twice, drawn once and lost twice in their first five league matches, so it’s no surprise to find them in a mid-table position.
If their form from last season is anything to go by, then Voluntari are expected to once again be among the teams situated in the bottom half of the division, and if they’re to avoid any nasty surprises come the end of the campaign then they’ll need to improve upon last season’s away record of 3-3-7 14/24 this time around.
Last season, Voluntari managed to squeeze a point out of Astra in a 1-1 draw, but I fancy the hosts to secure the points in this one to kick-start their domestic season.
