For much of last Saturday’s contest in Frankfurt it appeared as though Dortmund were resigned to remaining nine points back from leaders Bayern Munich, who had succumbed to defeat the previous evening. Erling Haaland wasn’t even among the goals last time and must now surely be well overdue. Dortmund would only fail to garner maximum points from one of nine home league fixtures so far this term.
Seven successive victories in North Rhine-Westphalia had preceded Matchday 14’s 3-2 reverse to Bayern and has since been followed by a 3-0 defeat of Greuther Furth. An impressive feat, however, is how Dortmund have netted two or more in every home Bundesliga outing thus far. Rather less impressive, though, is how FC Koln and Furth were the only visiting outfits not to trouble the scoring.
Freiburg – Streich’s men at risk of falling out of top-four?
More than two decades have been and gone since the men from the Black Forest triumphed in Dortmund. Across thirteen subsequent visits Freiburg would earn a solitary point – from a hard-fought 2-2 draw in January 2018 – concede on average 2.7 goals each visit, and haven’t so much as managed to score on their three most recent ventures. Comprehensively dispatched 4-0 in this very fixture in 2020-21.
So this is a daunting encounter in which to preserve your place in the Bundesliga top-four, something that is becoming increasingly more difficult with every passing matchday that does not result in three points. Between rounds one to ten, Freiburg had six wins and four draws to their name. In eight subsequent outings in the competition, they have won only twice and been beaten on four occasions.
Maintaining such high standards was never realistic and so it has proven. Surrendering a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to Arminia Bielefeld last time was the latest bitter pill to swallow, but does at least extend their unbeaten run to three matches (W1 D2) – a run which includes victory at home to fifth-placed Leverkusen. Moreover, only leaders Bayern have accrued more away points so far this campaign (W4 D3 L2).

This is a fascinating match up in the sense that we have two of the best sides in the Bundesliga this season when filtering their respective results from home and away matches. In fact, no team in Germany this season are generating points more efficiently at home than Dortmund (24 from 27; W8 L1).
