Milan remain in touch at the top of Serie A but will turn their attentions to cup action this week when they take on a Genoa team who continue to struggle in the league.

Milan Preview – Can Milan transfer their league form into this competition and progress to the next round?

It’s been a strong start to the year for Milan and their coach Stefano Pioli. A 3-1 win at home to Roma followed by an extremely dominant performance in Sunday’s 3-0 success away to Venezia had put them top of the league once again, albeit only for a few hours until rivals Inter played their match, Pioli won’t be worrying too much about the league position just now, with so much football still to play, and more concerned about putting a sustained winning run together.

Milan started the season unbeaten in their first 12 league matches (winning 10 of them) but slipped with three defeats in their next six. Sunday’s win means they’ve now won three in a row and this game gives them a good chance to extend that further ahead of a really challenging next few weeks.

Pioli will also be hoping to improve his team’s fortunes at home. The win over Roma was just their second in the last six at San Siro. You feel if they are to match Inter between now and the end of the season they’ll have to become more consistent at home.

Milan’s challenge in this competition was ended by their city rivals at the quarter-final stage last season and they haven’t won the Coppa Italia since 2003.

Genoa Preview – Will Genoa make it a memorable homecoming for one of the San Siro’s favourite sons?

It will be an emotional return to the San Siro for Genoa head coach Andriy Shevchenko. The Ukrainian striker spent seven extremely successful years as a player here, and was part of the team who won that final in 19 years ago – the same year they won the Champions League. Add a couple of Serie A titles during that time and it was a real golden period for Milan.

His experience of coaching in Italy has not been quite as positive, though. Having taken over in November, Sheva has picked up just one victory, that coming in the previous round of the cup when defeating Salernitana 1-0. Incidentally, they are the only team currently below Genoa in Serie A.

Prior to the managerial change and way back in August, Genoa beat Perugia 3-2 in the first round of the Coppa Italia. That remains just one of three times where they have scored more than two goals in a game. There has been some encouragement with draws against Atalanta and Sassuolo but that was short-lived when going down 1-0 at home to Spezia at the weekend. A result which leaves them five points from safety.

Genoa got to this stage 12 months ago as well and despite a brave effort eventually lost 3-2 away to the subsequent winners of the cup, Juventus.

Milan vs Genoa Betting Advice

It’s a tie which Genoa could probably be doing without at the moment. A game they are unlikely to win but one they have to fulfil. Their priority is clearly striving to stay up so it will be interesting to see what sort of team lines up for the visitors. Pioli has rung the changes in the last two league matches alone, making use of his squad as much as possible as he contends with injuries and illness.

The teams met just over a month ago when Milan proved far too good, winning 3-0 away from home. It’s difficult to imagine a different outcome.

Key Facts –  Milan vs Genoa Betting Tip

  • Milan have won just two of their last six at home in all competitions
  • Since taking over, Andriy Shevchenko’s only win as Genoa boss was in the previous round of this competition
  • It was a comfortable 3-0 win for Milan when the sides met in Serie A at the beginning of December

Despite their illustrious traditions and glories, Milan have only won this competition five times in their history. This looks an excellent opportunity to get to the quarter-finals stage at least and take them to progress by winning at half time and full time. They’ve been quick out the traps since returning to action.
