Doncaster Rovers registered a second round win in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night disposing of Championship outfit Watford to book their place in the third round, and they’ll be looking to continue their good form into today’s clash with Oldham Athletic at the Keepmoat Stadium this afternoon.
Rovers beat The Hornets 2-1 away from home after beating York City away from home in the first round. On the League One front, Doncaster have also beaten Yeovil Town 3-0 away and grabbed another three points on the road away at Colchester United in a 1-0 win last Saturday.
Paul Dickov’s men now need to transfer their impressive away form to home ground and they stand a good chance of doing so with the visit of Oldham Athletic here today. Rovers striker Theo Robinson was an unused substitute at Watford and is expected to feature against Dickov’s former club Oldham.
Onto Oldham now then, and Lee Johnson’s team have yet to get going this term as they’ve failed to win any of their first five matches in all competitions. This includes a 0-3 defeat to Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup, together with defeats to Leyton Orient 1-3 at home and last Saturday’s 0-1 away loss at Lancashire rivals Preston North End.
Former Southampton and indeed, Doncaster striker Jonathan Forte has scored 3 goals so far this season and is The Latic’s main threat up front, but he’s been the rare highlight for Oldham so far in an otherwise unspectacular start to the campaign.
The nature of Doncaster’s win on Tuesday night will have boosted their confidence no end particularly as the win was at Vicarage Road against Watford who are expected to be at least a top half finisher in the Championship. Meanwhile, Oldham are yet to really get going so I’ll back the hosts with the round ball here in what could be a 1-0 win for Doncaster.
