Dover Athletic have a game in hand over direct play-off rivals Aldershot Town as they prepare for the visit of relegation candidates Torquay United to their Perrys Crabble Stadium, and with home advantage here on Saturday afternoon, it’s a must-win game for the hosts.
Dover possess the best home record outside of the play-offs with stats of 13-4-4 45/24 and they’ve simply outscored most of the opposition that have visited, thanks to prolific striker Miller (36 goals) who has been well supported by Emmanuel and Lafayette (11 goals apiece).
The home side are also unbeaten in their last nine on home turf in the National League and come into this clash having registered three straight wins on the trot over Bromley, Gateshead and Southport. More importantly though, Dover’s last two matches of the regular season are against top half opposition, Macclesfield and Barrow.
Visitors Torquay United remain in the bottom four of the National League despite Easter Monday’s 3-1 home win over relegation rivals Braintree Town, but they’ll be hoping they can build upon this encouraging result when they make their way across the coast to Dover on Saturday.
However, Torquay’s away record stands at a disappointing 4-6-12 18/32 despite collecting a couple of important away wins at Southport and Solihull Moors during March, while their record on their travels against top half teams stands at a below-par 1-3-6 10/18.
In addition, The Gulls have failed to score in 11 of their 22 away matches to date, and they face a free-scoring Dover Athletic outfit here this afternoon. I fear for Torquay’s safety and long-term future, but I can see only one winner here…
